Peroxide does not really work well on nickels(with my experience). You will usually lose most of the detail, especially on the shield nickels. If you can tell what it is, put it in a 2x2 and call it good. If your having trouble getting a date, try putting a little milk on the coin. It will bring out some detail you thought to be gone. I know it sounds crazy, but it works. Hope this helps.

Worchestershire sauce is supposed to clean nickels. I had a very dark buffalo I soaked for a couple days, it did get lighter.
