i was just wondereing if some of you could posibly confirm this... i have heard that most vessels in the 1700's - 1800's, say over 60' long or so usually carried a strong box of cash or coinage in case they needed repairs while they were away from their homeport, as a way to keep salvagers or service providers/shipyards from slapping a lean on their vessel or also as means of bribeing officials into looking the other way reguarding taxes and tarifs etc.
does anybody know if there is any truth to this ? i tend to believe it may have been true in some instances, but for the most part probably not :( . what do you think ?.
also... what about the tale of ships owners putting a gold coin under the ships mast for good luck ?
are these old wives tales or what ?
