Well, since being on the road all summer, I have not had a chance to hunt.....I got back in town last Sunday, and today I was able to get out for about 2 hours...I headed down to one of my hunting sites, that used to have houses that the railroad workers lived in back in the late 1800s...This is the same lot where I found the dog tag from 1898 last summer....Well today I got down there and was hunting for about 30 mins when I dug up what appeared to be a bullet cartridge...I stuck it in my bag and continued hunting...I found a part to an aluminum comb, (found a brass one last summer) and some pennies, nothing too old there....and a bent piece of metal that looked as if it could be a tag....After getting home and doing some cleaning, the cartridge turned out to be a rimfire with a U stamped on it...This was my first rimfire! So I tried looking it up on the net, but couldn't really find one that matched...It looks a bit small for even a "short" 22 casing...maybe someone here can help? Any idea as to age? I then went to cleaning the tag, and once cleaned, I could make out some writing on it...I carefully tried to straighten it out enough to be able to read it, and this is what I can make out...It seems to have been hand stamped S.W. Williams on the top and directly under that in smaller letters is stamped Colored, and under that in bigger letters again is W.O.W, and under that the number 788, again small, and then under that is Terrell,....What could this be? Is it a baggage tag, a worker tag, or what? Any idea as to age? This is my first "baggage tag" so I was pretty excited...Any and all help appreciated! Thanks for stopping by and taking a look.

Cool comb. On the 22 case, it is a short used back in the early 60's, on the 'U' not sure but will look at my 22 collection for more info. Like the badge. Sorry can not help with more info for you.

Keep up the great detecting....

That is a terrific watch fob.

I wonder if it is actually for a black Woodmen Of the World member?

Very cool and personal find!

plehbah, after your knowledge

That shell you found is actually a 9mm shotgun shell, with the paper missing off the top half of course.
The only gun that ever used them was the Winchester model 36 made from 1920 -1927.
They were made for shooting rodents and were dubbed "garden guns" They were real popular for shooting
rats inside buildings because of the not very powerful round.
Very cool find and very rare!

Thanks Crusader, but I think the "tines" are too thick for a music box.

Thanks for the info Flylaps...I also found this on the web:
The 9mm Rimfire Shotgun Shell was introduced in 1920 for the Winchester Model 36 Shotgun.
Winchester only made 20,306 guns and discontinued the firearm
in 1927, and stopped production of the cartridge sometime shortly
after 1927.

The comb looks a lot like a couple my wife has... they were gas heated combs.. sat in a holder that was tied into the house's gas light system and it had a very small flame to heat the metal.. I can post a picture of an entact one if you are interested...
