If I'm reading/seeing the headstamp right, F A 40 would be a Frankford Arsenal 1940 made shell. Not a shot gun shell as the OPs is rimmed rimless.

Without measurements, If I had to guess, I would say a 50 caliber BMG shell, with neck damage.

ETA: Corrected my dumber than dumb typo (Rimmed to Rimless) that ToddsPoint politely and correctly pointed out to me. That is what happens when you're typing quicker than your brain is formulating the thought/idea!

Hey sarge, you mean rimless. A shotgun shell has a rim. A 50 BMG is rimless so they will stack in a magazine. I know you know the diff.
Edit: Most semi autos use rimless ammo. The 50 BMG is belt fed. My bad.

Duh moment, half asleep due to meds, and typing too quick for my brain...Great catch, amended my post to show the correct term and left my typo in place.
