Did you read the rate of material being fed into the test sluice around 700 pounds a minute???? I wish..maybe at that rate it doesn't matter:dontknow:

There are many different and varied styles of raised expanded metal on the market today. But the most commonly used in sluices is this type
#1 shows the raised going against the flow while #2 shows it going with the flow.

#1---------------------> flow
<img src="http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=935681"/>

<img src="http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=935682"/>
#2-------------------------> flow

Conventional wisdom would recommend #2

However, due to the unusually shaped well that is created by the diamond shaped pocket I suppose that a unique turbulence could be created that may cause a disruption to the normally expected low pressure area behind the high edge of each diamond causing an anomaly......
Naw...... #2 is the way to go :icon_thumleft:

One thing that all the studies do agree upon, is that maintaining the proper flow and feed rate is essential for the expanded metal to scour/exchange efficiently.

GG~

I use stucco lathe in my sluice. Cups face down stream. It works just fine for me seeing as all we find are between 100 to 200 mesh.

Finally found the post I had read which led to all this expanded metal chat:
2. Expanded metal riffles (such as the 1-10H) are superior to
1 1/4" dredge riffles for recovering placer gold between 20
and 100 mesh.
3. The orientation of expanded metal riffles is not important
to gold recovery.
- Poling Report

Interesting, for whatever it's worth. I tried googling "Poling Report gold" and found nothing so the mystery continues...

The G. W. Polling Study

NOTE:
* In the conclusions to the Polling study entitled: "Fine Gold Recovery of Selected Sluice Box Configurations" conducted at The University of Columbia by Prof. G.W. Polling. Authored by James Hamilton and Published in 1988 (published prior to the Clarkson study)

It was stated: "The orientation of expanded metal riffles is not important to gold recovery"
Just wondering if the word "RAISED" was accidentally omitted or if it is just understood (perhaps raised expanded metal was all that was being produced at the time of the study)

*There is no reference contained in the study as to how the above conclusion was arrived at or was there any data cited to support that claim!
One should always thoroughly read any study completely to avoid any misconception from reading a finding out of context and jumping to an ill-informed conclusion. (The Polling study was performed on only one size sluice, indoors, under controlled conditions)

Go for the gold

If it's anything like the Keene Super Concentrator, you'll be stoked. I guess the key with the matts is fast, laminar flow. I've had mine five years and it always amazes me. I run my material twice, but it's hardly worth the second run:

Recovered on first run (13 grams of -100 not shown):

Musher169: I'd love for you to try that setup both ways...traditional sluice first then Le trap first. Run the same material thru both times and measure where the gold is caught each time. Might be a cool way to learn a lot about the diff sorts of sluices.

Edit: fixed stupid autocorrect from martial to traditional :)

Yes, I will let you know what happens. 2/15 Having a b day party and going to be running some buckets of mine from summer and also went a little crazy buying concentrates for all of the guests. The party favors are going to be great. I will have the sluice running and the gold wheel spinning. Of course next to the refreshments! I will experiment with your Ideas.
