Spent a couple of hours at the location where I found two coppers last week. Find of the day was a silver button and a copper coin that is completely slick. I used a modern Lincoln cent as a size reference. A pearl-handled pocket knife and some other odds and ends. If Anyone could point me in the right direction about the tiny copper coin it would be appreciated because it has me baffled

I thought it was a cuff button when I dug it but I cant see where a shank was ever attached to it

After a little more cleaning and a look with a loupe it appears that there is a small spot of sotter from a shank or just a spot where the metal didn't flake off . Im not sure either way

Well it was a fun mystery for a while anyway.

But the silver button is sweet. I would say that was a great little hunt.

HI 46Wheat; If it is not a button which I kind of doubt it is because it is to large for a cuff button and to small for a shirt button. Here's my guess ok. I believe it is a King William and Mary 1/2 Pence from the 1690's. This coin has two heads on it. One facing right and one facing left. The size of your object is correct as well. Look up the coin online. Think about it ok. PEACE:RONB

That is very interesting . I wonder ....... The spot on the back is very small and it could be a piece that didn't flake off like the rest . Anything you guys recommend to try to pull some detail up if there is any there . Olive oil mabey ?

I like the ornate design on that button. The smaller one I'm with Crusader on. I'm thinking button as well. A W+M halfpenny would be a whole lot larger than that.

(In answer to the PM, to help others)

There is no British milled copper coin that small. Other than a rose farthing (smaller) or 17th C token (smaller & thinner).

I'm pretty sure its a button. I have had lots where its not clear there was a shank.
