Sleepy's Most Wanted (Roosevelt Dimes)

After having searched through $7,110 worth of dimes, I figured I'd get a Whitman Coin book (1946-1964 Dimes). I'm going to make it my goal to fill it by the end of the year! To the right is my "Most Wanted" List to help keep track of my progress. I want all of my finds to be from CRHing, so I won't be purchasing any of them. Here goes nothing! :headbang: 1)1955

Getting a little discouraged...not from the skunks, but from my strategy backfiring a little. Here's the issue...there is only one courier in my area. I can't push my dimes from one courier to another. To make matters worse, the coins I dump into the coin counter all go to this same courier. There are two types of boxes the banks get from this courier: hole and no-hole. I'm really beginning to think the hole boxes are filled using the coin counter coins, basically my dumps. I have not found silver (or foreigns) in a hole box ever, basically like 30 boxes, which makes sense because the coin counters in my area are incredibly proficient at filtering silver and foreigns. No-hole boxes average about one silver per box. I've been upping my volume lately, and suddenly the banks I've been getting no-hole boxes are suddenly getting delivered hole boxes. I've heard twice this week "I've never seen boxes like these before!" I went to my main pickup bank today and led off the convo with, "please tell me they didn't give you guys hole boxes this week..." And they did! Never got hole boxes before! I know some people say a CRHer can't have that much of a noticeable impact on the system, but with my coin courier pushing out mass quantities of 2019s last week and this week backfilling orders with hole boxes...am I crazy? I got 5 boxes today, but only went through the 2 no-hole boxes. The hole boxes are wrapped using Strings and Son wrappers...any thoughts would be appreciated!

Sleepy: if you are certain that you are searching your own dumps, may I suggest that you mark about 100 that goes into each dump. Use a different mark every time, log it somewhere on paper ( type of mark, date, qty ). Then see if you get some of your marked coins back in the next few boxes over several weeks.

I've never marked a coin, but that might be the only solution. Do desperate times call for desperate measures?

Pretty fun day CRHing...talked to the courier rep that was loading bags of coin into the armored truck trying to get some intel on these hole boxes. He ripped a bag of dimes...they start spilling on the sidewalk, about $3 worth. He then tosses the bag into the armored truck as several more dimes explode all over the truck. "Yeah, I dunno, man. I just pick em up and drop em off." However, I did see several boxes with holes in the truck, so...(be careful when speaking with these guys! I specifically asked him if I could ask him a question before I approached.) Next, got called out at a branch I never go to by a vault manager that was filling in - "Was the box we ordered you not helping?" :tongue3: Then, loaded up on foreigns when I dumped, including my first 1973 Canadian Commem 25 cents coin. Found my first ever W coin!!! :headbang: Really want to find that 1996W dime some day, too. Hilarious find was in Box 1 of my dimes. Each roll had between 45-49 2019 dimes and I still was able to cull a silver!

6800 is correct...unfortunately, higher volume didn't yield higher results last week. I know I've seen some guys on here doing higher. This week's starting off well, so we'll see how it goes. Busy week, so I don't think I'll break $5K, but like I said, we'll see.

I'm driven by the results that GMan00001 and I (along with a few others) developed in a thread back in 2013 where we concluded that someone would need to find on average 918 silver FDRs to collect the entire 1946-64 set. As of today, I am currently at 441, so I've got some work to do. I'm further motivated by the fact that I just received another assignment with a report date of April 2020! The assignment I'm in right now is very favorable to me being available during banking hours. My next assignment (like my last one) will likely not be. I'd like to find as much as I can between now and April, but I'm keenly aware of the fact that despite my best efforts, I will likely leave this place in a similar spot to GMan - with a couple FDRs yet to find. :sad11:

How much is the entire set worth? Well, I saw it the other night for $120 on the coin vault network. Might as well just fork out the money and save myself a lot of trouble...Except I'm not primarily motivated by the current value of coin sets/precious metals. I'm in it for the hunt! A guy named jamesandsons that used to be active on here had a quote in his signature box that I really liked:

"We never go after things in themselves, but the pursuit of things." - Blaise Pascal

Dozer, while I truly appreciate the sentiment behind offering to help me fill some of my remaining holes, I don't think I could do it...even if you gave me the coins! At the end of the day, I want to be able to say I coin roll hunted the entire set. Anything less would feel like cheating. As a fellow CRHer, I'm sure you understand.

Hey Sleepy Holow, I like the Pascal quote too. Interesting statistic about the 918 silver dimes you need to find on average to complete the set. What is missing is an indication of the amount of dispersal about that average. This would be the standard deviation or variance. I believe that it is likely that you could complete the set in less than the 918 - or, unfortunately, more. In admiration of your perseverance, I hope its less!

Incidentally, I'm trying to complete a Franklin half set from CRH - an easier task than your dime effort. After one year with halves, I've got 20 of the 35 dates/mints.

Hope to see you finish the set. Each hole gets tougher to fill...

First young head Canadian silver of my CRHing career and third 80% Canadian silver dime. First was a 1936 KGV on 13 Aug 2013 and second was 1943 KGVI on 17 Aug 2013. That was a great week right there!

YES! I just read that myself shortly after posting. First time I've heard of this variety. It was a little tough to tell at first, based on wear via standard circulation, but I agree with you based on font comparison. Sounds like my Shoulder Fold coin is the more common of the two versions...

Started the day by having my first ever trash can silver coin find! To be clear, I don't go sorting through coffee cups and such to find a coin, but if there's a coin or two in plain sight, I take em. Today, my "1964 FDR radar" went off when I saw a dime on top of an empty baggie in the close to overflowing trash can next to the coin counter. Sure enough - 1964D! Then in today's box, the first roll produced an 'S' dime. Unfortunately, once again, it was one I already had. Thought it might be a good sign for a big box, but it ended up only giving me one more. Overall, 3-dime day. Funny how low volume can outproduce some of the high volume outings I've been having lately.

Hey nomad! Total time on the hunt has been about 13 months. I CRHd for 11 months in 2013 and decided to pick it back up a couple months ago. I CRHd 39 of the 48 coin set in 2013...now up to 40...still need 8 more. For a more detailed backstory, see page 18 of this thread. HH -Sleepy :sleepy2:
