1862. Union forces assembled a “Second Stone Fleet” consisting of thirteen obsolete vessels, mostly smaller barques and brigs. The ships were loaded with stone, towed to the south edge of Rattlesnake Shoal, Maffitt’s Channel and intentionally sunk to block Charleston Harbor
The “Second Stone Fleet” included: the ship Bogota, 300-tons; barque Dove, 151-tons; barque Jubilee, 233-tons; ship Majestic, 297-tons; barque Margaret Scott, 330-tons; ship Mechanic, 335-tons; barque Messenger, 216-tons; ship New England, 368-tons; ship Newburyport, 341-tons; barque Noble, 274-tons; ship Peri, 265-tons; brig Stepen Young, 199-tons; and the ship Timor, 289-tons. Bruce Berman’s Encyclopedia of American Shipwrecks omits the Bogota but mistakenly includes the barque Edward, 340-tons; the ship Emerald, 518-tons; the barque Marcia, 343-tons; the ship Montezuma, 424-tons; and the ship Valparaiso, 402-tons.
