Nice one Fletch, what settings were you running?

Nice one Fletch, what settings were you running?

Disc on, sensitivity auto, audible threshold, 0 notch, 3rd dot on discrimination. I love this machine other than the weight.

How do Excals compare to GT as far as circuitry, tones, etc? Found first Mercury Dime at freshwater lake at approx 12". Really loving this machine, and will even more hip mounted

The Excalibur doesn't really compare as tones are different a bit due to different speakers but not that far off. Due to the extra features on the GT and the ability to change coils, if is more fun to use.

What's the best coil for covering large area?

What are differences in SEF and WOT coil?

I've seen posts about an SEF and WOT coil. What are the differences?

I own both wot and sef butterfly coils, 12x15 and 15x18. I have used both on my sov gt and on excals.

I own two excals, one has a wot hardwired on and the other has a sef 12x15 butterfly coil hardwired on. They are both DD coils and both go very deep.. I have not see a major performance difference between the two to say one us better than the other.

If I am not going into the water due to rough surf I prefer the sov gt with the sef 15 x18 butterfly coil, it goes really deeeeeeeep.

So a 15" WOT or a 15" x 12" SEF? I've read most setup 2 rods one with stock 10" tornado for water and one with larger 15 x 12 for wet/ dry sand.

I just started running my new GT at some lakes around our area last month. Ive been using the 10" tornado and haven't tried the 8" tornado that I have yet. I'd like to get a WOT, but Im just not sure I need it yet as I have a lot of learning to do with this machine and I think I may be running the 10" too hot as it is. Last weekend the machine would null every time I swept to my left side, so I turned the sensitivity down considerably from where I had it set. The nulling stopped but then I was questioning myself on the sensitivity setting. I guess Im just used to running the etrac as hot as I can get away with.

Well how i run my GT most of the time is .... Disc.- 0 ... notch set 0 ... Iron Mask on ( iron will null) .. Threshold switch - threshold ...noise cancel 1 or 2 up to user ...Sens - auto ... Volume 3/4 ... Threshold hum faint...

..... You should love the GT best detector out there ......

I know this is a little late, but, I was surfing and this comment caught my attention. My GT nulls out iron wether Mask is on or off. Is it malfunctioning? The worst part of hunting with my Minelab is the fact that, in DISC mode, I never get a signal off of iron artillery items, grape, shell...

As far as Iron targets, every time it nulls you have an iron target (artillery items, grape, shell)... Your not missing any iron targets, the null tells you the iron target is there...

Same as how I run mine...:icon_thumright:

Yup. Roger that, treasure hunter. I'm hip; the absence of a threshold tone is, in this case, an iron signal. However, it's a signal with no defining characteristics. The null combined with this machine's recovery time allows for no indication of size or depth of an object. A horseshoe tac gives the same silence as a cannonball. The absence of an "iron" tone is the worst part of hunting with this machine. BTW, the ground alone causes these "iron" pauses all the time.
