It was in the 30's here in my area of NC this afternoon, but I had to get out. I only had a few hours to detect so I hit a place close to home that I just gained permission to a few weeks ago. It was built in the 1800's and has many acres of soybean fields behind it and across the street. My first trip here yielded an ornate silver pocketwatch cover and a 1940 Merc. Today was my second time here and after digging up some coins (modern & one wheat) and a few relics in the yard, I took to the back field. Digging a few pieces of crappe' (trash) out in the field and freezing my backside off :o I set my discrimination way up to weed out the junk. I started to work my way back towards the house and got a good signal. Here's the results of that wonderful signal:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLTK5e56uW4

It turned out to be a 1945 Standing Walking Liberty half. :hello2: Not really old or rare, but it is my first large silver after all these years of detecting. :icon_thumleft: I love detecting in large fields and finding something decent out in the middle of nowhere. It's a great feeling. :love4:

Any idea what the latch looking thing is? It says "O.T. Co. - Pat. 1898 , 1903, 1914."

Congrats on your first. :hello2: Way to persevere in that expansive field!

I wish we had 30's here - It's 14 here right now, but we'll bundle up & hunt in the 20's if the ground is diggable in the woods. We're going to get smacked with more snow on Monday though. Grrrr.....

Doug,
That is very cool. I am surprised that is your first Walker. WTG. I never get tired of digging those. Such a big hunk of silver. ;D
I found one in the spring. Right in the middle of a big field. Those things show up anywhere.

You getting a bit cold? No sympathy here. It's been mostly in the teens here. Got up in the twenties today. Felt a bit warmer. ::)

Take care and have a great Christmas.

Bob

Thanks Bob.
Happy Holidays to you and the family. I hope you get that leg lamp you've been wanting. :tongue3: :laughing9:
I thought of you yesterday when I dug this coin. I remember all those coins in that binder you showed me. Amazing!
You and Nate are unbeatable. :icon_thumleft:

Congrats on your first big silver. I am sure there is more silver around that spot. The latch looks like it came off a window frame. 1945 is the 100th anniversary off Vol's birth year. ;D
Good luck finding more good stuff.

Thanks Triple Dman.
The "latch" turned out to be part of a medical device for a truss.
Should I send Quindy the coin for his 100th birthday? :icon_scratch:
I'll be back out in those fields soon hoping for more coins. The owner said they find lots of arrowheads out there too.

Thanks Mr Tuff.
The funny thing was I started heading out to the field without my camera pouch, but then went back to the truck to get in in case I found something. I was expecting maybe an LC to pop up, but not a large silver. I'll be carrying the camera with me every time I go out there now. :icon_thumleft:

MM, congratulations on your first large silver. I also assumed you had
all kinds of big silver. We are lucky around here, the silver comes up looking like
the day it was dropped.

Thanks everyone for the great replies.
Now I'm really starting to appreciate finding the liberty half out in the soybean field yesterday. I went back today and spent about three hours out there, but nothing. :-\ :'(
Oh well, I still love getting out.

Just found this. I feel better now. ;D :icon_thumleft:

$10.5579 is the rounded silver value for the 1916-1947 silver Walking Liberty half dollar on December 17, 2010. This is usually the value used by coin dealers when selling these coins at melt value.

Congratulations Doug,
You deserve it for all you do in the detecting community. The big Spanish are next buddy! :icon_thumleft:

Thanks Mike.
One thing I learned from this find is the half is called a "Walking Liberty" not a "Standing Liberty". You could probably tell by the excitement in my video and lack of glasses that I had no clue what it was other than a half dollar. :tongue3: :laughing9:
The same thing happened to me when I found my first half dime (1833). I had no clue what it was. :dontknow: I guess that's part of the fun of this hobby. You learn something new all the time. Now if I can just find one of those Morgan Stanley silver dollars. :tongue3: ;D
Good luck out in the field this week buddy,
Doug
