Spanish Silver 8 reale *** UPDATE*** A 1700's COUNTERFEIT !!! @@

I'm hoping like heck this is what I think it is. I'm hoping this is a piece of Spanish silver. If so, it's by far my best coin ever! Can someone tell me what it is? Age? Is it real?
I can make out the following:
"SPAN ET IN?" on one side,
and "Carolus" on the other side.
If it were all in one piece it would be about the size of a half dollar maybe.
The edge has strange symbols on it too.
I was hunting around in the field next to the old 1830 house in the Morrisville battlefield area today.
I will post my other finds tomorrow. I am a bit excited right now, so I wanted to get this piece posted first. I almost didn't even bother digging this up. Just before this I had dug up a piece of wire, and filled in the hole. Not even a foot away I got another signal. I thought it would be another piece of wire, so I wasn't going to dig it. Now I am VERY glad I did.
Please tell me this is the real thing. :o
The Mighty Tesoro may have done me proud again. ;D

My bad, since we don't know which Carlous it was. It could be a III or IV, Kirk. That coin could easily be a late 1700's coin. Not enough info for me to tell.

Still MM, awesome find. Spanish Reales were legal tender until 1857 in U.S.

Kas,
Thanks so much for that link with pictures. My wife and I (she's excited too now ;D ) have been looking at the reale under a microscope and comparing it to the Carolus III , IIII , & IV pictures. I'm pretty sure I have a Carolus III.
I'm basing that on the looks of the flowing ribbon by the letters "O" & "L" on the coin & the pictures. Mine closely resembles the III. What years were those made?
Thank you,
MM

That would make sense then what is was doing out in the CW field. I'll be hitting that big field hard. ;)
Thank you,

Doug, was it a "smooth" reading? How deep do you guess it was?

Bone Dry Detecting...Kirk

Kirk,
It wasn't a short sharp tone like I normally hear when I find a coin. Probably because it was down close to 8" deep. Thank God for this easy to dig farm dirt. ;D I also found a nice 3-ringer, and a buckle down deep in the same field. I'll post all of my other finds tomorrow.
Man, am I excited right now!!!!

Thanks Geo.
That's exactly 100 years older than my oldest coin before (an 1874 IH).

You can read all about those coins here:

http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/ColCoinIntros/Sp-Silver.intro.html

I think you'll notice the the back of the coins all look the same.

It will be "Reale" difficult to nail down the exact date without a date. Be happy that it is what it is, and know that it's Carlous era.

Re: MY BEST FIND EVER!!! *Spanish Silver* (I hope)

Thanks everyone.
This find really made my year. I haven't found a Barber yet, so this silver will have to do. ;)
I'll be working that field every w/end now until it gets too cold. It's really easy hunting too. Flat mowed field and easy digging soil.
I don't get a lot of hits out there, but when I do, it's normally been a CW era relic or a big rusty plow piece. I've only scratched the surface so far. Lots to cover yet. The place still has the train tracks along side of the property that was used during the CW, and it's still in operation.
Ya-hooooooo!!!!
I'll post my other finds tomorrow.
Thanks for the kind words,
MM

Re: MY BEST FIND EVER!!! *Spanish Silver* (I hope)

WAY TO GO!!!!!

MM,

You have come a long way! Congratulations on this as well as all your recent, fantastic recoveries. Your have literally TRANSFORMED yourself this year. I remember in early spring you were talking about your difficulty in finding anything earlier than the 1940's. You deserve a BIG pat on the back! Now, you're bringing home GREAT old coins and relics EVERY time out. Bravo!

Be forewarned! This is the point at which it gets exhilarating--and addictive. ;) Once you start getting the good stuff, there is no turning back. It has been great to watch you grow as a detectorist this year. And we're all here to support you every step along the way in the future, too. Congratulations again!

Regards,

Buckleboy
