Spanish Silver 8 reale *** UPDATE*** A 1700's COUNTERFEIT !!! @@

I'm hoping like heck this is what I think it is. I'm hoping this is a piece of Spanish silver. If so, it's by far my best coin ever! Can someone tell me what it is? Age? Is it real?
I can make out the following:
"SPAN ET IN?" on one side,
and "Carolus" on the other side.
If it were all in one piece it would be about the size of a half dollar maybe.
The edge has strange symbols on it too.
I was hunting around in the field next to the old 1830 house in the Morrisville battlefield area today.
I will post my other finds tomorrow. I am a bit excited right now, so I wanted to get this piece posted first. I almost didn't even bother digging this up. Just before this I had dug up a piece of wire, and filled in the hole. Not even a foot away I got another signal. I thought it would be another piece of wire, so I wasn't going to dig it. Now I am VERY glad I did.
Please tell me this is the real thing. :o
The Mighty Tesoro may have done me proud again. ;D

Sorry it is not real but I love the history and would take a 1700s fake any day of the week. Thank you and Don for the history lesson. Congrats on the find. I'm sure you will find a real one some day.

Thanks everyone.
At first I was disappointed to find out it wasn't an all silver reale, but being a counterfeit from that same time seems to add a bit more to the history of this find.

Awesome find MM! I would love to find a counterfeit as they are probably rarer than the real coin. HH, Mike

I have an article at home from the Lansing (Mich.) State Journal about a guy who lived "in the swamp" east of town who was counterfeiting Spanish silver coins. This was in the 1850's.

Hello ModernMiner...I Dug The Same Fake !!!

Thought you'd like to see your counterfeits 'twin'

I dug this cut piece at a mid 1790's tavern site and I was pretty certain it was fake when I dug it because it was not silver"inside" ::) You can see that its center is a cheaper metal !

I have wondered when they cut it to make change if they didnt hang the person spending it on the spot !!

Nice piece of history you dug !!

HH !!

...in a 1790's, candle lit Tavern after a long night of drinking,, it probably went un-noticed.

And I agree on the counterfiet 8 reale. Its probably more rare to find one of those than a real one. Congrats... its a great find non the less.

Re: Spanish Silver 8 reale *** UPDATE*** A 1700's COUNTERFEIT !!! @@

Can't you just imagine what was transpiring at the Tavern in 1790.

Colonials gathering to talk about the end of the Revolutionary War. Celebrating the new found Freedom of our Country. Reminiscing about the battles we fought in as a Continental Soldier or a member of the local Militia. Laughing and dancing and cutting up Silver " Pieces of Eight " just to make change to buy another Tankard of Ale to drown our sorrows for fallen Heroes.

...musta had a hell of a good time. Sorry we missed it.
