Something of known size would help (like a coin or ruler). Also a hint which river or at least which country would also be a start.

Yes, they look a lot like ancient oil lamps I used to see for sale sometimes...Mainly from the middle east and such.

As Mud Hut says, they're diya lamps, used during Diwali.

Diwali (also known as Deepwali and Tihar) is a five-day “festival of lights” celebrated in the autumn mainly by Hindi but also by Buddhists and Sikhs (although for the latter, it was not originally part of their religion). It’s traditional to place a multiplicity of lights (usually small roughly made terracotta lamps, regarded as disposable) inside homes, on housetops, outside doors and windows, around temples and other buildings.

I expect you will have such a community or perhaps a temple in your area.

I always called them offering cup to foreign gods. For incense and stuff. We find them on the bay here sometimes.
