18 for 18! (Just when you thought it had to end....)
This was our last day on the Sugar Beet, as the plants were pretty big & getting hard to swing between & step over at the same time. Took some co-ordination not to damage any.
In the morning we returned to the Roman/Saxon Site for 3 hours to mostly finish off the last bit. As it happens, I got the Sceat on the 2nd dig!
After Lunch we did 2 hours on a hilly section of another field where I added 1 more Roman Coin to the count & not much else.

6 Roman Coins
.58 Lead Bullet ('7' in the base)
2 Medieval Buckles
1929 Sixpence
Saxon Sceat AD715-50 - Which I think is going to come back with a less than 5 Recorded. Until the expert comes back, I'll hold my breath & update soon...

'The 2006 book that added this new Series I, Type a, commented that the Wolf like head was biting a Snake facing Right. Mine is facing Left & it looks like a tongue to me.
He called the other animal, again facing Right & mine is facing Left, a fledgling running with what looks like a Fish in its mouth. Mine looks like a tongue, & a creature that is half Dragon & half Snake!'

UPDATE:
I knew it was a good one but it's the first of a new Variety (1st Recorded) of a Series I, Type a.
''This is a new variety with lateral reversal on both sides. I've just done a proof read of edition 3 of Sceatta List. I'll try to persuade the typesetter to include it. Would it be possible to send my contact details to the finder?''
I have given permission for it to be included in the next book edition.

So your find just re-wrote textbooks and requires a last minute edit to the typesetting? Seems pretty bannerish to me... [emoji2369] I vote that.
Correct, I've just contributed to re-writing History. :occasion14:
That's what I love about what our hobby can do.:thumbsup:
It's not the first time, but it's a once every 6 year (12 man year) type of event - at best! (For us)

UPDATE:

I emailed the below images to be included in the next edition of the Sceat List, but as I missed this years Edition (III), mine will go in the 2020 edition (IV).

As a new variety it will be a 44-40. Therefore, full attribution is a Series I, Type a, Variety 44-40.

''In my classification it will be 44-40 (group 44 is 'fledgling').''

I questioned him about the 'Fledgling' carrying a fish, as my version looks more like a tongue, & he replied the following;

''The fish idea and association with the cult of Cuthbert was suggested to me by the archaeologist Richard Morris. I find it convincing, but sceat design are often intentionally ambiguous and may convey several meanings.''

I also, needed to work out an indicative value, so we can share this with the Land-Owner. (undisclosed at this point as the owner has not been informed yet) But below is part of that response;

''The condition of your coin is around F in my opinion, but of course this is subjective and as there are no others of this variety it ranks as 'best in class'!''

I've been giving this more thought today, as I work up some ideas for another up & coming display that I will be presenting.
The above link was the closest I've come to a 'unique to date' coin from any period. Although it was the only one of its type from that mint, it was a known type. (1 of 12 that Henry minted)
Mine is not as good as a new 'Type' or 'Series', that really would be something amazing with the increase in Detected related reporting, but its the next best thing. ie. a new Variety of a known Type.
I'll never give up trying, but it will be a hard/near impossible one to improve on.:thumbsup:
