Bumping this back to the top. For those who attended the "LA TNet Get Together", Wayne owner of LA Treasures Museum had done so much research on this, that he actually went to the extremes of diving for the Barataria in the Amite River. Read the news article. In the book, Among The Cotton Thieves Col Bacon witnessed the burning of the Barataria as seen from the Manchac swamps along the railroad tracks, looking across the lake to the Amite River. From this book, is where Wayne got his ideas.

A little more history... http://www.usskidd.com/ships-barataria.html
