Very unusual find. Don't see many of those due to critters eating them up. Your one lucky dude.

To me this looks like what they would have used to scrape arrow shafts with. Just guessing....

Cool find. 8) I wonder how many passed it before you had the good sense to pick it up.

Hey Old River, I didn't know that those newer detectors could find bones too! I'm down around Galveston, with limited internet access. Keeping busy banging nails, but I'll be doing a job on a great old house in the historic area real soon, it looks like it may have been an old school! I haven't been out yet with the detector this year.... HH

Boy you just can't beat these new detectors. I've dug up a lot of bones on my site. There was a few square nails in the pile also. Hope you get a chance to look around that old school there in Galveston. Keep us posted. HH

Old River, I use an awl frequently.

To pierce, scribe, or probe.

Could you explain how an injun would employ the twin rounded bobs on that device?

I just don't understand...

Thanks,
rmptr

RMPTR I would suggest that you look up the AWLS that indians used, and find out WHY, and How they were used. It could be interesting. Thanks for viewing.

Thanks daggerdog. This is the only one I've ever seen. I didn't know what I had until I go to looking at indian artifacts in a book I have. I could have possibly been used to decorate pottery with. Thanks for viewing, and sharing the info.

Found some pics that might explain what an awl is. Found these and I think that the pointed end was broken off, which left the two protrusions at the end. Cool find dad! You're just full of all kinds of surprises!!

Roger that, Daggerdog.

Just because someone made a tool doesn't mean it was a good one.
When it was dropped they may have just let it lie there!

;D
