now for the bad news -- folks do not normally find things like this "find of a lifetime" often --might be awhile before you get something near as good . -- but its a problem most folks would like to have.

i have my great grandfathers Templars ceremonial sword and that sword is very very similar to it. my sword dates to the teens. incredible find for the woods! makes me wonder how the hell it got there? maybe the guys son was playing with it and left it out. at any rate, it was there a long long time, probably was lost when it was new.maybe not a rare sword but an incredibly rare detecting find! :o you just don't see these dug....EVER! outstanding! congrats on the banner too!

Nice find. I bet apples to oranges that that sword didn't just end up in that situation by chance. Honestly, I bet the Masonic origin of the sword isn't a coincidence either. It may be a directional marker for something that may be hidden on the property...

I just realized, the guard appears to be on upside down. I have the identical sword, right down to the same design markings on the guard and knights head. Mine is identified to a Civil War era New York militia unit. The shield shaped piece on the guard is supposed to face the blade, the end of the sheath comes up under the shield shaped part when the sword is placed in it.

that is the coolest thing I have seen in awhile. Makes me wonder if there is anything else around there and how it could of been there for so long without someone else coming by.
Banner!!!

What surprises me is that it someone didn't just decide to bend it down so people didn't get hurt walking by.

I don't think the rainguard is turned in an incorrect direction... FWIW.

I'm with the Sentinel... that sword didn't get there simply by happenstance.

A couple possibilities come to mind.
..It was stolen, placed up in a tree, and not recovered...
..or, possibly, it's direction could be pointing to SOMETHING.

THAT could be an interesting possibility. Well worth investigating.

Or did I read too many YAMASH*TA posts?

BTW, fellow Tnet folks have found a number of swords in the last year.
I can think of one found in the yard of a home, buried in the grass... somewhere in Dixie, I think...
And there was another, cached in a crack in a rock in Germany? It was very old.

Best

I have no way to at this time. I really have to get the equipment and more importantly the computer know how! Mine has a fluted bone or ivory handle, the only makers mark is a picture of what may be a bear stamped on the ricasso.
