I found this one and thought it was an odd shape. I didnt post it because I thought another rock. I kept is cause the shape was different. I was told it was a Hammer Stone and was told not all had the dimple in the top probably due to the type of stone it is made from it just didnt last as long as they wanted it to. Another add to my collection.

What is a geofact, Rock?

A geofact is basically a term used within the archeology community. It's word play using geology and artifact.

For a newbie like me it basically describes all those funny shaped rocks sitting everywhere around my house that gave me some reason to believe they'd been touched by ancient hands. Lol. And of course like every other new member I posted them hoping that someone might offer advice. The longer I've been on here I've realized these guys get A LOT of those kinds of posts. And they actually take the time to at least respond saying its a rock.

Anyhow...haven't seen your name around so guessing you're new as well...welcome. I've learned a lot here. Including how to determine if its just a rock...well kind of. I still bring home and keep those that leave me with a shadow of a doubt.

Ok, thanks. I'm just learning, sorry for the novice question.

You dont learn unless you ask. We all had to learn. Everyone of us probably still bring home rocks and then after looking at it know it isnt a artifact. I was hoping this one was a undrilled pendant in the making by the shape. I was told it was too thick for that but still a artifact.

looks like a biscuit discoidal to me rock... " Game stone"
Do you see how the edge you showed has pieces removed in a controlled pattern.. ?"pecked"
That is not battering from use as a hammer stone.

Looks like one they were testing and knocking the cortex off to see if it was worth the effort to make anything with....... Or they may have used it to reduce other rocks down to a workable shape? I like items like that. They make you think of scenarios that it might have been used for. Another problematic artifact, haha.

Nice hammer stone rock. That would have been a monster had it been made a pendant.

I just want to ask... what makes everyone so sure its not a discoidal perform?
They were pecked and ground into shape before being polished.
Your piece shows zero evidence of ever being used as a hammerstone in the photos.
But it looks just like biscuit discoidals from your area.

This one is from north east Georgia
Also.. rock.. the dimple you reffered to in your original post is a trait of discoidals.
The biscuit type doesn't have one.
I don't see any evidence of damage from use as a hammer.. I do see evidence of shaping however.

Looks like a game stone to me. Pretty confident it is.

I'm glad someone does.. its a nice find... I hate watching things miss identified.
For some reason people tend to believe a lot of what they find are going to be finished products... I never understood that.. it's just not the case.

Rock, I have a piece pretty near a twin to yours. I've never posted it. I wasn't sure if it was natural or a rough discoidal. I'll try to get you a pic of it tonight. I held on to it, but never have had any others check it out. I have some small pieces that fit the game stone description. Check em out.

Well let me post the bottom pic. Its flat I was thinking possible Mano but it looks like it was never finished. I havent found a Mano yet. I put all 3 pics up together so you dont have to go back up top. I really didnt think it could be a Hammer due to the type of stone its made from. Most Hammers and pecking stones I have found are made from quartz cobbles or flint. Hope this helps.

Can someone help me understand what you are seeing that tells you these are man made objects? No disrespect intended but they just look like smooth rocks to me (especially the ones posted by the other members) and I am very curious. Thanks, Blair
