Look's like a "Dandy" button...how big is it?

Yes, looks like a frock button. Probably made out of Tombac between the mid 17 and early 1800's, I have a similar one.

Yep...These are the only two I've found and the one is right at an 1 1/2 the other at 1 3/8.Both from late 1700 to 1800's house's.Nice dig, post a pic when you get it all cleaned up

most dandy's are copper-alloy & plated with silver/gilt, just like the one posted :icon_thumright:

Nice Dandy! Worn by a man who practiced "Dandyism" It was practiced by some men, that if he wore large buttons like the one you found on his clothing, he would be noticed as higher status in society. The original, full form of 'dandy' may have been "jack-a-dandy." It was a vogue word during the Napoleonic Wars. In that contemporary slang, a "dandy" was differentiated from a "fop" in that the dandy's dress was more refined and sober than the fop's.
