I went back to where I found my last silver quarter and tried something.

I planned on ONLY digging signals that I figured were possible AND
ONLY if they were 6 inches or deeper!

I was only out for a short time as this was just an experiment.
Did pretty fair. But, I'll get to that in a sec.

First, I'd like to ask you all what you would think if you came up on something
like this? :dontknow:

Untitled - 5.jpg

A hornet's nest?
A hummingbird's nest?
Somebody had their brains knocked out of 'em? :icon_scratch:

Nope....

Untitled - 6.jpg

Near as I can tell, it's a 'shroom! LOL
Biggest I've ever seen! LOL

Untitled - 7.jpg

It had a couple friends too. :)

Ok, so back to the hunt:

I didn't find very much, but I skipped all the gold rings this time. ;)
Wanted to see how this technique worked on deeper targets.

Untitled - 1.jpg

Untitled - 4.jpg

Never get used to it and never tire of seeing it! :)

Untitled - 3.jpg

Another one! Not quite in as good shape as the other but still! :)

vlcsnap-00431.jpg
vlcsnap-00436.jpg

A whole wheat toast & a button.
If you look close, you can see what looks like a
little gold in some of the corners. Blazer button? Other? :dontknow:

vlcsnap-00437.jpg vlcsnap-00438.jpg

A lil less for wear but still with a full date. :)

vlcsnap-00439.jpg

'43 P silver nickle :)

vlcsnap-00440.jpg

All in all, a fairly successful experiment, even if I do say so my own self! LOL

Thanks for peeking!

Giant puffball mushroom! Choice edible but only when mature and still white in the middle. Really an awesome mushroom.

Lots of 'shrooms out in my area, too.........Seems to me there's something about the ones that get blue stems after they are harvested..........:dontknow::laughing7:

Congratualtions on the nice silver! :occasion14:

IMHO, Experimenting with detector settings and techniques can make for better detecting and more enjoyment.

Blingie sure likes the large silver!

Whadi..congrats on a successful hunt! It's funny you tried that method, as I sometimes do exactly the same! It just depends on the site...the age, how hard I've hit it before, how much time I have, etc...or just what mood I'm in that day. Thx for the great post, love that silver GW...ddf

WTG Whadi. Great finds once again. You are on a silver streak! So I'm curious what your discrimination was, if any, during your experiment?

Interesting, to say he Least.

I'd say you got really Lucky on the nickles. especially the buffalo.
considering you were Cherry Picking.
but more likely you know your detectors signals well.

2 Silvers, 2 Hunts , & Both "big-uns" nice :icon_thumright:

Wow Whadi your new technique is really paying off. I may need to use it on some older pounded permissions. Hopefully I get as good of results as you.

WTG Whadi. Great finds once again. You are on a silver streak! So I'm curious what your discrimination was, if any, during your experiment?

Thanks! Silver "streaks" come and they go. But, what I'm gaining in experience on my machine is priceless, (to me & no, Jeff! I didn't say it was worthless! ;) )

As far as my settings go, KyDigNQueen, I'm almost always running my ATP wide open and with a full charge. No discrimination, full sensitivity, iron audio on. A note on the iron audio: I have noticed, several times now, that some, deeper, older nickles will give me an iron audio buzz initially. But, if I check it in several directions, it will give me a nickle signal. A mix. If it's deep and I get that scenario, I'll dig. It's kind of, what I call, milking the signal. I don't accept that the initial signal is enough to just dismiss a target.

The best is to just dig EVERYTHING. But, I figure that I paid a LOT of money for one of the best discriminating detectors out there. Seems a shame to not use it, at least sometimes. ;)

This field I was in is one that I have been over many, many times before. So, a lot of the surface clutter has been cleared. I knew that there had to be older, deeper coins there. Even though the ATP is excellent on depth, I know it has it's limits. I was feeling like the stuff was getting to be right at the limit and deeper. But, the conditions change and this long, deep soaking rain we had experienced over several days told me it was at an optimal range.

There are TWO main reasons why my "technique" appears to be working. The first is that I ALWAYS try to get out of HIS way! I ask HIM to lead me over what HE wants me to find that day. Secondary is that I've struggled, (also with HIS help), to understand the language my detector is speaking to me. I don't rely on sound or numbers alone. It's a combination. This time, I was concentrating on just trying to find what I figured "might" be a good signal. But, not, as some call it, "cherry-picking". For you see, from what I've seen MOST would NOT have dug the signals I chose. Although I said I left the gold rings behind, it isn't true. If there had been any, digging the signals I dug would have included them. At least the ones 6 inches down or more. :)

I think I'm getting it down though. There was some junk dug, of course. But, surprisingly, the ratio was only about 2 to 1! Anyone who has done this for a while knows, that is FANTASTIC!

Hope something up there helps.

Naw, Jeff, I'm not thinking this was a "cherry pick" at all. See my response to KyDigNQueen

Thanks for the info! I had no clue! I also will NOT be picking any mushrooms to eat. Sorry, I just don't trust my judgement. LOL Interesting sight though! LOL
