According to local lore, the general store was the scene of a Civil War shootout between Union soldiers and a local resident who was a Confederate sympathizer.
The paymaster's shack, where miners got their paychecks, was robbed frequently, says Steve Frazier, a fifth-generation resident who knows a lot of the old stories about Valles Mines. Frazier's ancestors were former superintendents of the mining company.
As the property's current superintendent, Frazier says he would like to see the huge tract of wilderness stay undeveloped.

.................................

Valles' Mines started when Francois Valle came here from Quebec in 1749 to buy lead from the Indians and stayed to mine. 251 years later, the Valle Mining Company* labors on in a Reclamation Project of the 8 square miles of lands. Mining has not been all bad, leaving us with 10-acre lakes and miles and miles of roads, wagon trails and paths in a huge forest.

The forest has grown up around Valles' hand-dug mines, the Rocky Digs. They now sit in the 240 acre Wildlife Preserve Area #1. Thanks to Wildlife Rehabilitation allowing us to be a Release Site for rehabilitated wildlife, we have been able to restore the native populations of red foxes, raccoons, ground hogs and possums. This spring around the lakes in Preserve Area #2, flocks of 55 turkeys were spotted and Canada geese and Blue Heron have become regulars. The Preserves are designated No-Hunt zones and open all year. Patrolled regularly, the other 3000 adjoining acres close during deer season.

*Valle Mining Company, a Missouri corporation. With former mills and works in Valles Mines, Missouri, the property now serves as a tree farm.

Update :

Thanks Gypsy, I am now remembering what an earnest researcher you are.
Thank you for helping promote by creating this interest.

Now, in a way i was reluctant to put the website for various reasons.....
one to keep the site low key.... and avoid any future problems.

PLEASE DO NOT CALL STEVE OR JOHN ABOUT THIS .
i HAD NOT INTENDED THERE PHONE #S TO BE POSTED ON LIST
Is there a way to delete or edit that post ?
It is hard for me to explain all the details but i want them to be able to see
this Forum and i dont want it to become and issue . Flow witih me on this.

[This list is internet searchable and phone # crawlers grab #s for marketers for one ]
Two, i am in timely sensitive negotiations regarding the hunt .

This is a major important site, and i have alot more riding on this than just
a metal detecting get together so please understand.

Two things can screw this up , them getting inquiring phone calls......
detectorists showing up unannounced or worse being found on property
with no permit and or out of context. [ not part of our party ]

I am in no way trying to put a damper on this ..... i am going to give it another
week , but at this point , I am not seeing enough interest nor reservations made
to warrant going thru all the trouble ... I am still hopeful tho.

Its all good,

Detector(s) used
Minlabe SE, ace 250, fisher 1280x
(heavy sigh) I cant make it to short a notice and schedules to thick the next 2 months, 3500 acres sounds like a spot that could do more than one hunt every year or so.
