Killed it with my first hunt of 2015. I dug 3 wheat cents today... TWO of them were 1909 VDB! Got two Indians 1899 and 1881. Hit a silver quarter pocket spill 1953 and 1941. But the coolest thing is the sweet MW Co. padlock.

I knew I had one 1909, but didn't know it was a VDB. Then I had a mystery wheat cent that I could just see the wheat ears on the back. When it came out of the peroxide bath and I saw another 1909 I couldn't believe it! Both were VDB cents.

The 1881 is worn smooth.

I've dug similar locks that are iron, with brass fittings. I put one through my electrolysis setup.... the iron came out awesome and the brass lost its deep green patina and was shiny new :BangHead:

How do you guys clean your padlocks without affecting the patina on old brass?

Thanks guys! I kept checking them over and over for S marks. I've now dug three 1909 VDBs, but no S's yet... One day maybe. The soil these two were in was kind to them... Both are solid with no flaking or chipping.

Congrats on some great finds!! Your soil was kind to those cents- the 2 VDB's and the '99 Injun are in great shape! Continued success to you!

Your soil must be sweet on coins because I am liking the condition of both! Here in North Jersey our copper gets hit real hard. Then again I've found a few that were inexplicably in perfect condition. I found a 1909 last April but she was not quite in the condition of yours. Congrats!!!

Thanks guys. Seems hit or miss here with condition... Some places produce great coins and others destroy them. The 1909s look hardly worn and I found them feet from each other. I slowed to a crawl and dug signals that produced mid tones one direction and iron in the other. Both were masked by iron... The 1899 was feet away as well... And also masked. I had been over that same section twice before and passed up those signals. They were pretty nasty sounding!! I've cleaned a ton of trash from this place and I'm finally getting down to the deep stuff.

Thanks everyone.

The lock was flaking a lot and the brass parts on this one didn't have a great patina, so I decided to go ahead and put it through electrolysis. They always come out looking awesome. Then I put them in a pot of boiling wax that totally removes all moisture and coats everything with an unnoticeable layer of wax.

Here it is cleaned and preserved.

Its a Mallory Wheeler & Co. padlock... I believe one of their smoke house styles. The company was around from the 1830's to the early 1900's. My guess is that this one was made in the late 1870's to 1890's. Just a guess based on style and age of the site I dug it at.

Nice job on cleaning that lock. If you were much more aggressive I believe the iron would have started to fall apart.

After acquiring a pile of wheats, I'm still waiting for my first VDB also. A very elusive little guy for me. Congrats. My rarest wheat so far is a 1911s.
