On Sunday, the weather had warmed up enough for me to head back to the site where I’ve been finding the British Military hardware. I hunted here for 2.5hrs and made some interesting finds! My first find was a sterling silver spoon bowl & shaft marked “Sterling Pat 1891 Mermod.Jaccard.Co.” Then not 10’ from where I found the spoon bowl I found a sterling silver spoon handle inscribed ‘M’ and stamped “J. G. J. & Co”. Through online research, I was able to discover that this spoon was imported from England and sold in Toronto from 1830 – 60. Unfortunately, these two pieces are not a match, which hopefully means there are at least two more pieces of silver out here! I also found a flat button and four more Isaac Campbell Knapsack Hooks; this makes 17 for this site so far! :o

I'd like to get back for another hunt this week as the temperatures are predicted to stay above freezing, but this also makes for very muddy work. I also included a picture of all the aluminum trash I dug in the 80 – 81 range, this is the reason why I found the ‘coin silver’ spoons that also hit in the same range! :laughing7:
Thanks for looking and hope you all have a great Thanksgiving weekend, :occasion14:
Dave

PS. Here are a couple of pics of the spoons after 4hrs of tumbling.
I'm thinking about making the shaft of the 'decorated spoon' into a ring for my 11 year old daughter. :icon_scratch:

That's a nice chunk of silver. I have a few plated handles with similar design but not sterling. Glad your getting out while you can. The end is coming way too soon

I guess if I had a choice of digging in some mud or having to take a jackhammer and busting through frozen ground I would opt for the mud....LOL Love the sterling spoon parts. Hope you can find the other half of both on your next outing.

Nice finds . I didn't read all of your post and immediately jumped down and started writting about a confederate camp. Then I read your post and saw where you are and immediately deleted that post.I get excited easily. Down here in Virginia , if you start digging those knapsack hooks you are probably in a confederate camp. Love this hobby. Great finds!

These are a first for me as well Tim!
Like you, I've dug tons of brass and silver plated utensils but never silver until now!
Thanks for your post,
Dave

Thanks for your post digndeep!
I wasn't going to attempt to straighten it, because we all know what happens when you try and straighten old brass! :laughing7:
I just took my time and the pieces took their original shape back fairly easily.
Dave

Thanks for the comparison pic Abe! :occasion14:
They do look similar!

Have a great Thanksgiving weekend buddy!

Thanks for your post Greylock!
I think I'll be able to get out this afternoon and then again on Sunday... but the weatherman is calling for snow here today! :tongue3:
Dave

Nice finds..

Thanks!

Thanks very much for your words of support beez! :occasion14:
I don't mind the cold and the mud too much, but when can't feel my hands then I know it's time to stop! :laughing7:
Dave

Nice going on the silver spoon parts, and more hooks.

Thanks very much Jim!
I went back again on Tuesday and found 4 more hooks and a couple of brass horse buckles, but no more silver.

I'm in Kingston tonight and hope to hit a couple of sites this afternoon, after I make a couple of sales calls of course! :laughing7:
Hope you're still getting out,
Dave

I hear you about finding the knapsack hooks Tony, I found 4 more on Tuesday which makes for a total of 18 from this site!

I'm thinking a saddle maker probably worked here or at least somebody who 're-purposed' British military leather while tossing hardware.
This is due to the large amount of 'British military finds' I've dug here... just look at my avatar for the evidence!

Thanks for your interest and have a great Thanksgiving weekend!

I wish the getting out was to do some swinging of the coil instead of a hammer, trying to beat ol' man winter to the finish line for putting up a building. Good luck on getting out to a few sites while your down in the area. The main machine (3030) is going into the Dr's soon so it's ready for the spring hunting season, I have to make an effort in hooking up with you to do a few sites.

Abe I was about to ask if that looked like the one we both have. lol. Very similar!

I used to not like finding anything besides coins, but spoons are rapidly rising as one of my favorite finds!

Nice digs and congrats on the old silver

Sorry to hear you're putting the 3030 away for the year Jim! :icon_scratch:
We got 3cm of snow here in Kingston this afternoon... you likely received the same on the island.
I'll be hunting a site near 'The Pen' tomorrow morning, hopefully my hands can take the cold down here! :laughing7:

Back to the 'martingale site' east of Toronto for one last go on Sunday!
It would be nice to meet up for a hunt next year either in Napanee or K'town, we'll have to plan something.
Dave

Its weird but I sometimes cherish the sterling silverware more then the coins, I really dig the detail put into them. Congrats, and Happy Thanksgiving to you

These were my first 'sterling flatware' finds in 4 years of detecting, so it was pretty exciting to find them in a farm field!

Have a great Thanksgiving as well,

I watched 'The Lions' put a beating to 'The Bears' this afternoon... that was nice!

Great looking ware, Dave. I've yet to find silver ones too, so I can appreciate them. Even though your Thanksgiving is a different day, I hope you had a happy day!
