Dsty or chad. What does it mean when you have a two faced stone looking the opposite direction?

Hi Backwoodsbob

Here is some basic info on your
- Its called a Janus Marker

Janus
Roman Deities
Janus 001.JPG
Roman God of Passage, Gates and Doorway.

Janus was depicted as a god with two faces, facing the opposite direction. It was said that one face was looking into the past, while the other face looked into the future, so Janus was also the god of time, if not of prophecy.

Janus was an ancient king of Italy and married a woman named Jana. Janus was the father of several children other than his wife. Janus was the father of Tiberinus by Camasena, of Fontus by Juturna, and of Canens by Venilia.

The month of January was named after him, and his festival, called Agonium, was celebrated on January 9.

As a god of motion, Janus looks after passages, causes actions to start and presides over all beginnings. Since movement and change are interconnected, he has a double nature, symbolized in his two headed image.

In general, Janus is at the origin of time as the guardian of the gates of Heaven: Jupiter himself can move forth and back because of Janus's working.

He presides over the concrete and abstract beginnings of the world, such as religion and the gods themselves, he too holds the access to Heaven and to other gods: this is the reason why men must invoke him first, regardless of the god they want to pray or placate.

He is the initiator of human life, of new historical ages, and financial enterprises: according to myth he was the first to mint coins and the as, first coin of the liberal series, bears his effigy on one face.

Thanks Lost Horse, I've seen them on a lot of sites. The heads on some I've seen may be and animal or human. The two heads are not alike though. Does that make sense to you. I also find them looking at each other. So what kind of order would use them?

Would the Jesuit use those effigies? It seem like there are a mixture of symbols being used.

https://www.nps.gov/grte/learn/historyculture/colterstone.htm< why does everything have to be spanish and treasure related?

The question is did he actually carve it or did he find it and scratch his name on it?

that stone map in another thread was left by trappers also, I would explain how I know but I really don't feel like wasting my time.

feel free to ban me again, this time permanently.....:)
