Still a cool find even if lead. You could always cast your own bullets. :D

Re: 3 lbs. Silver Ingot.

Lol, you guys! Don't even mention the word lead! :) The only thing they made ingots of around here is silver. On tuesday I will try to get it assayed/weighed.. Happy Thanksgiving!

Picture of the mine and a very deep mineshaft. No fence around it or anything either.

My friend and I also come to the conclusion that the ingot probably weighs closer to 3 lbs.. :)

Re: 3 lbs. Silver Ingot.

I believe that is what is called a "dore"...it is the crudely refined ore before it is shipped off to the refiners!
What a find! I hunted around some gold mines in Colorado and would love to find one! Good job!

Re: 3 lbs. Silver Ingot.

That would definitely be silver! Silver looks much like lead, even in the "dore" stage. I have even seen some silver ore come out looking charcoal gray/black at times. Great find! Sure seems like the silver ingots are coming out of the wood work lately. I wonder were mine is? :'(

Re: 3 lbs. Silver Ingot.

Is it possible that what I have is a "DORE" also? Found this about 3 yrs. ago. Actually has some sort of markings on it that I cannot make out. Several tiny spots on this thing are turquois in color. Always thought it was lead but now I'm not so sure. Weighs 1lb. 3oz. made into in ingot. Found at an 18th century Tavern site, that is now a private home. Will take better pics with digital camera. These are scans.

Re: 3 lbs. Silver Ingot.

Augggh, another ingot!! :o

It sure looks that way Hogge, best way to be sure is to have it tested by an assayer, it is a simple acid test that is done right in front of you and it only takes a few seconds before you know what you have and what purity it is. There is a fee invloved, but it shouldn't be that much and it will be worth it to have the assayer's test report in hand, that way if you should ever want to sell it, you'll know the value, and you'll have documented proof for the buyer on what he/she is buying.

Re: 3 lbs. Silver Ingot.

It sure looks like silver to me hogge! Great find :)

I found another piece of dore.. This one seems to have come from a bar instead of an ingot. Looks like it was broken into 6 pieces. I scratched away the black/grey tarnish so you can see what the inside looks like :) Happy Hunting!

Sweet find! hope it is silver.
I still think though that it is possible to find some lead around there to since "silver is extracted from lead"

Re: 3 lbs. Silver Ingot.

I brought my pieces to an assaying service. Find the results out in 2 days. Official weight of the big piece is 39.10 Troy oz. or 2.68lbs.
Fingers are crossed!

They said an acid test on mine wouldn't work..? So they have to drill a hole in it to collect the shavings..
