Hi, I was looking at the coins I found today and I noticed the "4" in 1942 looked strange. So I got the strongest magnifying glass I could find and looked at it and I can see a 1 beneath the 2 in 1942. I've tried to scan the coin and I've tried to take pics with the magnifying glass in front of the camera lens. please look at the pics, and tell me what you guys think.

Sorry, I'm not seeing the overdate on that piece. :(

I don't see a 1 either, but I do know that on the 1942/1 mercury dime you can see very easily without a magnifying glass. I posted a picture of a 1942/1 Mercury Dime from the PCGS website. Good Luck And Happy Hunting!!!

that pic is of the 1942/1 Philadelphia mint Dime. Look at the pics of the 1942/1 from the Denver mint on PCGS' website. There is a big difference in the overdates between the two mints. if you could see this coin in person you could see what I'm talking about on my dime.

My weak vision probably wouldn't see it even if your pics could be made more dimensional. Unconventional suggestion for you: possibly if you impress the coin into silly putty, the impression might show the number "1" outline visibly online. If silly putty still exists. Good luck with your dime, as I hope it turns out to be double-struck. Andi

here's another pic showing what I'm talking about. keep in mind this coin is a 1942d which is the harder to spot version of the 42/41 overdate. the Philadelphia Mint version is very easy to spot, and can easily be seen with the naked eye.

I can see what your talking about...though it isn't real obvious or anything. It looks like it could be a 1.

It's very obvious in person. But it's extremely hard to try and photograph.

I can see it on the 2nd photo and if my old eyes ;D can see the 1 it must be a double stamp date. :hello2: Sure hope it is. WTG. HH poppy

Okay, I've stared at your pics so long that I've freaked my cat out. :laughing7: I even tried reducing them to get a better overall look and still just can't see what I believe to be an over-date though I hope it is one for your benefit. Look at my attached photo of your coin. The part between the red arrows, is that what you are seeing as a 1?

I'm aware that the Denver issue is not as obvious (and less encountered). What about the other digits, any doubling to those?

The 4 should have a little piece off the bottom facing left as you look at the coin, I don't see that on yours either, rather, possibly material going the other way, see blue arrow.

Coin Dealers Confirmed Today that my 1942d Mercury dime is a 1942 over 1941

Hello everyone, I took my 1942d Mercury dime I found last week with me today while I was out of town on business today. I took it to two different reputable coin dealers and both confirmed my Merc is the 1942d over 1941 coin!! Both dealers recommended I send it off to be certified and slabbed. so I'll send it off when I get back from Soupies "Field of Fools" hunt
I am really excited, I've found a ton of coins in the three years I've been detecting, but this is the first really valuable and rare coin I have found so far.

Thanks Soupie! Although I do admit I owe you big time for being in your hunt. But you still can't have my 42d/41 merc! LOL!!!
