Re: What my dog found today

My grandpa's german shorthair used to do that at least once a week....he did not weigh any 175 lbs but I was a lot littler then and it was quite a struggle! Seems they were either after the porcupines or the skunks and I can't say as to which I hated worse. Sure hope your pup there is a lot more comfortable now than he was in the picture!! How was your pretty wife's birthday by the way?? Still no word from Brian. :(

Went metal detecting today & brought my two St. Bernards with, now they aren't the brightest dogs in the litter & they are pretty slow too. About the only thing they can catch is pictured below!!! Why is it they never learn? This is number 7 that they caught.
Ever hold down a 150 lb dog & pull quills? The male weighs 175..

OUch talk about acupunture :tongue3: bet that was fun popping them out

I don't think that there is anything sadder in this world than a dogs face with quills in it. It took my hound two times before she learned. I had an uncle, and his dog never learned .... the dog met his final fate by too many quills. Sure hope those St Bernards learn someday.

Anyone ever seen "Homeward Bound"? Reminds me of that. Poor dog, he'll be ok.

Oh man.....looks like a job for the vet. :-\

My sister in law was walking in the woods and came upon a baby porcupine. She decided to very gently pet it. :tard: :tard:

She said when she pulled the quill out of her finger it was the most painful thing she ever felt. She almost passed out. Now she never pets porcupines. :P

To me, that many quills means a trip to the vet so that at least the beastie won't be in as much pain at removal time.

Re: What my dog found today

Ouch, ouch, ouch!

We had a dog that bit one porcupine - and then spent the rest of his life being so mad at them that he would chase them done to get a mouthful. He was absolutely sure there had to be a way to kill them without them getting him. (boxer - 7 times snagged).

If you decide to take them out yourself, take a set of scissors and cut all the tips off, and wait a few hours while the quills deflate, then pull them out - they will come out easier, and not quite as bad for the dog. (and you).

Of course, the problem is if the dog has any down his throat - that's always vet material.
