For a beginner build your own L rods and go from there. No point in spending big money to learn. No electronics needed unless you decide to experiment. Even then you can build one of my boxes from the LRL subforum for a few dollars.

I agree with Darke on the L-Rods and would recommend the Nut on a string/fishing line for the pendulum.
To get unbiased Instruction for a beginner I would google "Letter for Robin" on the American Dowsers Association. They aren't trying to SELL you anything. Also google "Louis Matacia's Solutions Through Dowsing" a Free Manual for our Service Members to learn to find Bombs, Tunnels, and Enemy.

I have other reverences that I won't post to this Forum but just PM me and I'll give you my personal E-Mail address so we don't Violate the forums rules, I'll give you some personal experiences I have had Investigating this subject. And You Won't Have To Pay for that either. I think that you may be able to gain great insight to this Subject by reading "Ingo Swann's book Everybody's guide to Natural ESP". He was able to CUT through a LOT of the Self-Imposed BS Ideas that Dowsers have been Imposing on Themselves over the last 200 years +.
I hope Jeff doesn't think I have exceeded this forums rules. I'm still learning what is expected for us to be able to discuss on this place. I know Why he has imposed such Strict Criteria on Posts as I won't even register on another "Dowsing Forum" out there as it is so full of Misinformation I just don't have the time to Sieve out the Nuggets from the BS.
I would also suggest to Go into the Archives on this Dowsing Topic and Read from the Start apx. 2004+-.

I have had success for a lot of years. I still try everything I see or read. If a part of it works better than my system I put it in and use it.I used a LRL before I knew anything about Dowsing. I still use the rods that came with that LRL, I have shorted them to 14 plus inches and they are 3/32 brass..The parts to Dowsing are...Locating signal line, Locating the source by making sure you do not dig where another signal line crosses it. Knowing when you have found target, Checking the depth. I always dig into a 5 gallon paint bucket with a 1 inch screen on the top. I check each screen load for big things before I dumping it, When the bucket is full I dump it away from the signal lines and in same pile, then check it for gold. When I find the target I always check the hole. If I have found a signal in the tailing's I can go home or put a 1/8 inch screen on the bucket and put the tailing.s though it then go home or go find some running water.. Art
