I was planning to do a Saturday morning road trip after my trip while waiting for my parents to drop off my kids, but I was out late Friday night and forgot to set an alarm so I didn't wake up until it was too late to do much. So I just drove down to a bank in a small town about 15 miles away that I occasionally buy bags from and have done okay. Also stopped at a few banks on the way.

Bank #1:
Picked up 1 box of nickels and 1 box of dimes

Bank #2:
Picked up $60 in hand rolled halves...skunk

Bank #3:
They only had a single half dollar which I left there.

Bank #4 (my primary stop):
Picked up the following
1 - $500 bag of dimes
3 - $100 bags of nickels
4 - $50 bags of pennies
And while at this bank I cashed back in the $60 in halves and while they machine was counting I could hear silver in the bag. I asked if I could exchange for a couple of halves since I had 5 more in the car, she said wure so I ended up with 4 - 40% as well (1968-D(2), 1969-D(2)). She also put my name down to buy the half dollar bag once it is full.

Last night I went through all $400 of nickels but didn't post them as we had a pretty good lightning show going on at that time so I didn't want to be on the computer.

Nickel Box:

Great finds as usual GMan, 'specially that VDB.

I get a kick out of how you know which bags are from which pick-up as well as the corresponding original post. I could only dream of being that accurate. You should work for NASA, if they had a CRH program, that is. ;D

BTW, do you have a tally on your pre-1940 wheaties this year? You always seem to find 'em easily.

Yes, I do keep a tally, but my breakdown is pre-1941 instead of pre-1940 to align with the dates in the coin folders in this case.

I don't have the number on me, but I have a good guess as I average almost exactly 1 per $25.

625,000 (approx searched) / 2500 (per box) = 250 pre-1941 pennies. I would say that is within +/-20 of being correct.

I have been averaging around 8 total wheat pennies per box, so about 12.5% of my wheats are pre-1941.

I also can't remember the exact numbers, but I do know they minted a lot more wheat pennies post-1940 so the percentage should be low. I want to think it was less than 25% of all wheat pennies were pre-1941, but I can't remember for sure. I'll look when I get home tonight as I had calculated the answer a while back out of curiousity.

Wheat pennies minted between 1909-1940 = 6,788,521,698
Wheat pennies minted between 1909-1958 = 25,824,458,676

so 6.XXX/25.XXX = approximately 26.3%

Well, there are two less wheats as of today. Stopped by the penny casino on my home from the movies and got $10 more. Found a 1942 and a 1944-S and two Canadians, both 1998.

Only a few billion left for everyone else! Thanks for the wheatie numbers GMan, I've always meant to tally those.
