W T Rawleigh's, fit for man or beast

My tennant showed up with this rusty crusty tin, he had found in the woods at lunch time. "Ahh Kim will love this and know just how to clean it up" He was pretty excited to give it to me, we detect together at times. I was pretty excited to try Treasure Tale Lemon method to clean it. I think as she did I over soaked the bottom, it was complete rust so I figured it would'nt hurt. I used a fresh lemon, squeezed the juice and rubbed the meat of thte lemon over it, like it was a cloth. That really worked well on the top and sides. I could not believe the salve was still complete in there.

W T Rawleigh was a facinating man, starting his business out of his mothers kitchen at 17, April 6, 1889 he started traveling door to door selling his wares. He eventually expanded, and had a factory that was measured in acres. You can still buy his products today.

Kim you did a great job on the cleanup, glad TT passed along to you to try lemon. I use lemon on gilt buttons and some medallions and have been very satisfied with the results.

Now, I have been spending about two hours on and off using an Ink Eraser trying to cleanup a copper I found today that was totally unidentifiable, even after peroxide, the coating on it is like cement, so the only easy thing to try next was the ink eraser, working fairly good, I at least now know what the coin is. ::)

Might also consider using a light coat of car wax for protection to keep from rusting further, expecially in a high humidy climate.

Re: W T Rawleigh's, fit for man or beast

Dan has not seen the tin YET, tonight when he waxes it. ;D We had the antique show last night, so fly home from work, change, jump in the truck, go, go, go! Jeff saw it and couldn't believe the difference.

The whole cleaning process and the research on the tin made it even more fun. Now when someone sees it, you have a real story to share. Rawleigh was an incredible man.

Thanks for the side by side and lesson TT!
