Civilman, the design resembles the cross and pellet design, found on English medieval hammered silver coins.

yes it's thought they were used by ordinary people, but no one knows for sure what. It's lost in the mist of time :dontknow:

Its a long explanation, as they had many uses over hundreds of years. Its very rare to pin these down to a maker or timeframe (although some are dated). Rob is right, although these are fairly common, very little is known about them & most are a mystery. I have a friend who studies these for local variations & we are still miles away from understanding even 25% of them. I have a dated/town name on one & no historian can pin down its use. Can't ask for much better, in terms of details, but it remains unknown.
