One of the times when we were up north camping this past summer, this tree was at the back of our campsite.

Take a look at the shape of this growth on the tree. It was about 8 feet off the ground and kind of funny
to see. :laughing9:

I stood on top of the picnic table to get a good shot of it. :laughing7:

That's "pick-i-nick basket" he, he, he

Ok, I'll bite - what is a Christmas hamper?

Beth

PS: Don't you hate it that now they call him "Smokey Bear"? Some dip tried to tell me it was never Smokey THE Bear, and I proved him wrong.
My mother kept all my childhood stuff, and one thing that was in her hope chest was a cloth book that I had as a child - and it was named, Smokey THE Bear. :tongue3:

Our Christmas hampers are a bit like your "Pic-i-nic" baskets. For us it's a big whicker basket with all our Christmas fare in. Things like Turkey, Beef joints, Pork cuts and joints, seasonings, jams and sauces, chocolates, nuts, local made beer and a selection of wines

Yup, Lots more good answers here.

Tee that is what I heard about how he came to be their mascot; of finding a bear cub burned, but still alive. So they
started using him in their fight against forest fires. His picture is very common all over Michigan.

Ian, This is the first I have ever heard of your Christmas Hampers. It looks like a fabulous thing. Our Masonic
lodges in this area will be starting our 'Toy And Clothing Drive' in a couple weeks. We place a box in different
stores in the area where people can put new or almost new toys and children's coats in it. When the boxes are full,
they have a number to call and we pick up the box and place an empty there to start filling again. There are a
couple of places that we give them to for distribution to needy children. It works out pretty good every year
and seems to be more effective than trying to collect money. The kids definitely get the benifit out of the program.
And it's kinda fun being involved in it.

If I remember right...didn't he get his name because the forestry service found a little bear cub all burned up that was still alive?
Thats the story I heard.

lookindown,

Yep. In the original story, there is a forest fire from a careless camper, and Smoky is a little bear cub who cannot find his mother through the smoke. He is scared and climbs a tree. The tree is burning, and a ranger comes along and rescues him, and his feet are all burned. So, they treat his injuries, they name his Smoky, and he becomes the mascot for the prevention of forest fires. Smokey the Bear. (in the original book, there are pictures of him up a tree, and the ranger, and then him rescued and he has all four feet all bandaged up - it was a cute story). Then, one day, someone all of a sudden started saying it was Smokey Bear, not Smokey the Bear. But, in the story, they named him Smokey, not Smokey Bear.

Beth
