What geology is associated with gold deposits?

I am new to gold prospecting, and while looking over mineral maps in California I noticed the map of gold claims is similar to the location of volcanic mineral deposits. Volcanic rock and glass as well as quartz etc. So is that what I should be looking for when deciding on a area to go prospect?

Gold originates in ignous rock formation, which requires heat. Gold does not originate in sedimentary rock, which is not formed by heat. Keep in mind, that does not mean that gold cannot be found in these formations, it simply was not formed there.

So looking for evidence in mineral geology maps for volcanic origin minerals is the best scientific method to find likely places for gold then?
