Fresh or saltwater as this can make a vast difference in choices. Generally you'll get the depth of the width of the coil on a coin sized object, though this depends on the minerals in the ground. Your budget requirements too.

For your all around sanity your best bet is the Minelab Excalibur but if you want max depth a PI is the answer. I use an Excal in most places and drag out the Garrett LS Infinium at the end of the season when most of the trash has been removed and I really want to go deep. A PI in a junky area will drive you nuts and as Sandman says your pocketbook may be your guide.
Either way buy the best you can get as the competition out there is pretty stiff. HH

Fisher F-75 and a Minelab Explorer XS with Gray Ghost Originals
I've thought about buying one for years so i've been reading up on them forever and come to the conclussion that I want a VLF machine and having used the Minelab Sov on land and beach and Fisher CZ7 on land and beach I would go for an Excal 2 or a CZ21 which are both from what ive been told over the years the water proof versions of the previous mentioned machines. You dont hear too many folks bad mouthing the Excal 1/2 or cz20/1. ;D
