Does anyone know what this is? I found it in the river the edge is all the way around it.

Could be a Mano like this one. I found the pair!

If not, a chopper. It is an artifact, I'm willing to bet my left leg ornament!!

It looks like it was broke down to size / shape. It don't look like it was used for grinding probably a chopper but why a edge all the way around it?

Id say chopper also. It could of been mounted in a handle and used seeing it is flaked all the way around or it could also be a large round scraper. I found one made out of a large quartz flake. Mine is 4 inches by 3 .5 inches. Yours looks better than mine. Nice find

It may have been hafted in this manner and used as a tool in scraping hides. Where the concave part (marked yellow), that is where it was positioned to keep it intact.

Here is a close up of mine. Had I not found its mate, i would have just thought Rock. It fits the concave spot in the medate perfectly.

RWW - is there any different in the surface texture to suggest grinding wear or wear on the very edges to suggest use as a scraper? It certainly has the look of an artifact but can't be sure from the picture. I don't think it's a mano probably, more likely a chopper, scraper kind of thingy. Really don't know though. Probably worth heading back to the same area and seeing what else is there. Neat find.

No the surface is all about the same. The white spots are river scum I couldn't get it all off. I found it in the same area were I found some Adena points and tuns of other artifacts. Ill post some more pics of its surface and edge

Found one similar. I have no idea what mine was used for. The material also looks like yours.

I'm pretty sure yours is a Mano. It looks flat to me, and shows wear on the side. Not trying to hijack this thread, but I'll add pics for you to compare yours to Cat.

I just thought of something. Many mano finds have visible wear on all edges. Yours may have been used on its edges more than most, causing sharp edges. ??

It does have sharp edges like it was chipped to the shape. it's made of garnet I believe.

Is one of it's faces unnaturally smooth? More than likely, what you have is a multifunctional tool. What I like to call a primitive Swiss army knife. These pieces can hold many titles. It's a win win! It's really a neat find!!

I dont think its a mano the edges are just way to narrow like a blade for that piece.

Discoidal perform?

Most discoidal stones are rather thick, I believe. Why preform a stone that is already that thin?? Second thought of mine disproves my first theory. If the edges were used as a mano, chopper, or any other high impact contact tool, scarring would be visible. I can't see any. ??

There are spots on The edge that aren't as sharp as the rest like it was used. and also the spot old digger pointed out.
