What Type?

I found this small rock while hunting a field the other day. It was kinda round so I picked it up and it was very heavy for its size. I hunt artifacts as you can tell by my avatar and pick up many different types of rocks along my hunts. This one is different so I put it under my MD to make sure it was a rock and not iron. Its stone and was found in north GA. It has some shiny flakes in it like mica but it wont flake and a knife wont scratch it so it isn't lead. Gem Stone?

It's a tektite, in your neck of the wood's known as a georgiasite, many in georgia are green, they come from a meteorite that impacted in the chesapeak bay 30 or 35 million years ago.

So you are saying it is a frag from a meteorite?

Could be a tektite. However they are not usually heavy. You can try a streak test and see what color comes of it. It may be a bit of hematite, if its heavy, as well. If it streaks red hematite. Tektites being a form of glass are usually not to heavy and probably wont streak test on a ceramic tile due to similar hardness. If it does streak and it is a tektite it will flake like glass and may show a green coloration in the fragments.

I agree with DD. Do a streak test. Check for magnetism to.

tektites are not usually part of the meteorite itself they are what you call second flight debris, the meteorite impacted and molten rock flew along with water and other debris, georgia is one of the known strewnfields for the meteor i talked about, if it is a georgiasite it is quite large and if it has very much character to it it would be worth $500-$600, here in texas they are called bediasites, named after the bedias indians or the town of bedias depending on who you talk to, also many believe the strewnfield in texas is from the same impact, but i like many believe it is from the meteorite that impacted in the gulf of mexico, this one also caused the brazos river k t boundry which is shaped the same and parrallell to the strwen field, there are websites out there that deal in the selling of bediasites.

Well darn then. I was hoping it was more than just a heavy rock. I dont know if it will stick to a magnet I dont have one. I just know it doesnt register as being medal under my M D
