What's in your pocket!

Funny thing is I have been CRHing for about a year now and feel I have exhausted (with the help of some fellow CRHer's) local silver supply, along with the adjacent 3 states. I haven't even been ordering boxes as a 1-2 keeper average per box just doesn't get me excited anymore. Just to much work. would rather just buy a little bit at a time.

But anyway decided I want to start hoarding some nickels and 97% copper pennies. So last night decided to go through my change I have collected over the last 3 weeks, and pull all the nicks and copper pennies. Was shocked to find 3 wheat's 40, 44, and 53d, 1 war nick 45p, a Fiji penny 87, and of course a few Canadian coins, 1 penny 87, and one quarter 03. I have always saved all foreign for the heck of it.

I know "it's out there" but was shocked to see that spread in my change from just 3 weeks. man I wish I would have been checking earlier, but was so focused on acquiring Ag before it hits $100 per oz ;D.

I wouldn't be saving nickels right now unless the mint decides to change the composition. Nickels haven't changed in nickel content since WW2.

As far as Canadian coppers, I keep all of those. A check of Ebay for Canadian copper cents within the U.S. shows that they sell a lot closer to melt value (probably because there's no law in the U.S. that says you can't melt foreign coins). Besides, Canadian money is worth more than U.S. money now. I think Canadian dollar will grow more so since they've got a huge oil resource. The U.S. gets most of its oil from Canada now. Canada will become a rich country.

A 1-2 coin average per box is still good in my book. I've had half of my boxes become skunks and now I just get a bunch of new coins.

i don't save nickels myself, but i can understand people who do.

since any nickel is worth $0.0731062 (or 146.21% face value), no need to sort or anything. just get a $100 box of nickles and you have $146 melt value. currently there's a law against melting u.s coins that are not silver, but there was a law against melting silver and gold coins in the past and it was canceled so who knows..?

Re: What's in your pocket!

Thanks guys, I certainly understand about the nicks, nothing to crazy just maybe a couple of hundred dollars worth. But the day is coming when the nick will be changed. And as the world burns, I simple like the idea of having my own little hoard of them. I want to think the best of my fellow man, but am not encouraged with all this crap happening in the US. And nobody is telling us the real story..including Fox. Commodities, I mean this is all on purpose...this "gradual decline of the US dollar". But nobody will talk about the fact we have a ton of commy's and socialist from top to bottom throughout our federal and local governments. It is sad that all these good people in these Unions are so blinded and easily lead around....like sheeople. Sad but apparently there is truth to that term....anyway I digress.

I agree with alot stated here..Until they REALLY change the Nickels to something cheaper, i dont hoard them. Its to easy to run to the bank and pick up a few boxes, knowing they are all good...and Also..1-2 keepers??..I would LOVE to have 1-2 keepers per box...Im only my 4th straight skunked box..and i still think..."Maybe the next one"

I believe that the melt ban for nickels does in fact include the war nickels and thats why (before the recent surge in prices) you could often find them at or even slightly below spot prices. Even now when compared to cull 90% decent condition war nickels are still at very low premiums over spot.
