Where have all the 09s gone?

Just out of curiosity, I pulled out every single 2009 Nickel (regardless of grade) from almost 10 boxes this week and no joke, I found more Buffalo Nickels (3) than 2009s (2). I get why there aren't a ton of 09 cents out there, but I still find a decent number of those. 09 Dimes are scarce, but I still find them, but the nickels are shockingly hard to find for some reason.

Is it just me, or do other people find as few 2009 dimes and nickels as I do?

Look at the numbers dude. The 09's were minted in SIGNIFICANTLY lower numbers. the lowest since 1955! So yes, they are and will be hard to find. And you pulled every one out that you found. So did I . So did a LOT of other people. So they are harder yet to find. And with the advent of ebay (something they didn't have in 1955) EVERY Tom Dick and Harry that finds a few is pulling them and selling them on ebay. SO most are being hoarded.

I've said since 2009 that hte nickels and dimes were worth keeping. Even bought some uncirculated rolls off this board from people who fiound lots and didn't care to keep them. At face plus postage. I have all I have ever found. And the pennies? Nope. ALthough they are a little rarer to find than other years, there are way too many of them out ther eto ever be worth anything. Look again on ebay. Circulated nickels still sell at nice premiums. Pennies do not. And I have returned my 2009 pennies to the wild, except for one uncirculated roll of each design. That is mostly because my son was born in 2009, so I kept them for him. But pennies don't interest me in 2009. Nickels? Absolutely!

Keep what you find. ALL of them. Or even sell some off on ebay if you don't want to keep them. they ARE getting those premiums. And the rest can be put away for that proverbial reiany day. :-)

2009 Jefferson Nickels have a very low mintage when compared to previous years (they are in no way rare and are many times more plentiful than the 1950-D)

2009-P39,840,000
2009-D46,800,000

Compare that to

2007-P571,680,000
2007-D626,160,000
2008-P279,840,000
2008-D345,600,000

It was the lowest mintage of nickels since 1957

The reason is that the Mint stopped making the nickels (and dimes) near the end of April of 2009 and I believe a large amount of them were shipped to Puerto Rico making them scarce to get in change in the continental US.

I went through $600 without finding a single one. Finally found one of each (P and D) in my last $200 bag. I did find a decent number of '09 dimes though (before I started almost exclusively edge checking dimes).

I've kept every one that I've found, going through about $4,500; to date, I've found less than 20.

I didn't know that many were shiped to P.R. INteresting. I happened to find my first one in November 2009 while in P.R. getting ready to get on a cruise ship! Thought it odd. Now it makes more sense. :-) Learn something new every day ...

Our economy took a nose-dive at the end of 08 and so many businesses were closed in 2009. In 2009 all the Fed Reserve branches had enough coins for existing business activities so the 2009 nickels and dimes were just sit in the US mint vault during 2009. There is one geological exception: Porto Rico. Travellers empty their pockets before get to the airport. When they arrive in Porto Rico they are empty pocketed but when they leave the island they have coins in their pockets. So PR always has a coin exflux and banks there always request coins from New York Fed. A large amount of P-mint Nickels (through New York Fed District) were shipped to PR at the end of 2009. For a long time on ebay only a couple of CRHers in PR were selling 09-P nickel. Some of 2009-P nickels were released on the main continent in summer 2010.

For 09-D nickels and dimes, the story is different. The coins were not released until June 2010. They were released in some cities in Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Idaho, California, etc. Not every Fed district branches requested 2009 coins so not all the D-states got a portion of the 09-D. CRHers in those states took the advantage by selling rolls of them on ebay. So most of the 09 nickels or dimes were still in rolls and hoarded in the hand of dealers or prospectors. Since CRHers couldn't intercept all the 09 coins from the banks, there were large amount in circulation in these states. But if you are not living one of those states, your chance of find one is very slim.
