was out with new hunting partnerWhydah on Cape Cod
went to a few beaches looking for gold and I got that too - but thats a different story
this was NOT the same place that I have been getting all the musketballs in the water
I have over the years gotten a few musketballs here also but never expected this
find - USA contenental Rev war button
when I looked in my scoop - i thought I had a blackened nickel
picked it up and rubbed it between my thumb and forefinger (wish i hadnt - I think I broke off part of edge doing that)
I felt nub from shank and said "wow - a flat button"
now i was in about 5 feet of water with my mask on - I flipped it over and saw squigly line and thought it was
rope of a fouled anchor and thought I might have a navy button - pulled mask up to see it better
and was shocked to see USA on the face - bonus find for the day
and cross one off of wish list
IMGP0573.JPG
Oh I found 2 gold rings at this spot too during AM low tide - one being a 1926 class ring
Oh and I went to another beach for PM low tide and found 2 more gold rings
will post those later separately

I am sooo jealous of my fiance for being on the same beach as the two of you, even though she wasn't detecting! Wish I was there to bask in your glory!!! Congrats, you got my BANNER Vote for sure!

Great find! You will certainly want to preserve it once it has dried out. I would start by soaking in distilled water, and change the water at the end of a week and let it soak another week to remove the salt deposits (if this was salt water). If not, a week soak is still not a bad idea.

Then, provided you haven't put oil on it or coated it with anything yet, mix elmer's glue with a little water to make a thick syrup and paint it on the button. Otherwise it will continue to flake away at the rim.

Great find!

That sure is a nice Continental USA! 230 year old pewter buttons are so fragile, you are fortunate to find one in such nice condition. The only one I have found had a lot of the rim missing.

Very nice save for sure!
