Why do I keep these?

I realize they are old shot shell bases, I know a lot of you have found them too, my hunting buddy just tosses them into the trash. I even have seen a few web sites devoted to identifying the headstamps!

Are they valuable?
Are they collectable?
Do they hold a historical significance?
Are some of them extreamly rare?

Do you keep the old shot shell bases you find? Tell me why you DO or DON'T keep them!

lol,, Good question Jim,,,
I have often wondered that myself... I keep the ones that look old, or unusual, but toss most of the ones I think are modern. I'm sure some of them are probably rare, and very collectable, but I haven't a clue as to which ones to hold on to... I think we're going to need more junk boxes, coffee cans, and long forgotten junk drawers... ;D
Good luck, & Happy hunting~

LOL Jim! I wouldn't care to bet that everyone here at Treasure Net has at least one of those things in their collection. I keep mine because of the work I put into the recovery.

I found an old .10 guage once and a few .16 guage. I toss them in the box..... :D

They really help me date the site. Compare brand to the dates they were manufactured and assuming they were dropped (fired and ejected) there you've got a pretty accurate date.

I only have 2...Winchester 1901 No. 10 (still has cardboard intact) and Winchester Leader No. 12 and I hope to find more. I've been doing a extensive history of our property and these 2 items hold historical value to me. ;D

Very true, but I was a packrat before I was a THer. Dug up items, just one more class of items to infuriate the wife. ;D I keep them because it combines my love for MDing and guns.

The early shotgun shells were made entirely of metal - not sure of the age, but Remington, etc. might be able to tell you. I've found 2 of these in 8+ years of detecting.

And hey most of them are brass and brass is worth money. Of course you would have to have a barrel of them but what the heck what else you got to do just bring them home and throw them in a box.

A friend found a use for some of them. He popped the fired primers out of them and used brass screws in the holes to make drawer pulls for his gun cabinet.
