I was searching for some documents and stumbled across these. I bought them off of a friend when I was a kid. I think I gave him $2 for them.

I did a google search for the signer on both checks, and found Israel D. Condit was a mill owner, freeholder, legislator and philanthropist who helped organize the Morris and Essex Railroad and along with other influential financial backers, subsidized the passing of the train through Millburn, NJ.

Cool! I'd say they're worth a few bob as well, so they were a great investment for $2. It wouldn't suprise me one bit if you got $300-400 for the pair on ebay.

Those are in beautiful condition ~ if you're interested in selling them, I have seen similiar items on ebay go for big money.

Thanks for sharing them....good luck!

Cool!

Personalized checks from the 1860's. This guy must have had money! And it's written to his son for $233.75. That's a BIG TIME allowance for 1863! :o

Those are really neat, and I agree about the penmenship, people just don't take the time to write like that anymore.

guess in 200 yrs they will be saying people just don't type like that anymore

CHECK THOSE STAMPS!

Those are both revenue stamps and most are common and worth little. BUT! There are varieties of both that can be worth much more!

Very nice documents!!!
