It is illegal now

on State owned land which includes all water! Does not pertain to private lands or water that is reparian governed.

Those guys would rather it rot in the ground! Remember, if its fun its illegal in Wisconsin!. I myself do not hunt relics just coins. If I found a historic relic I would leave it in place and report the find and location. I do believe you should be able to get coins or modern items without penalties!. As our detecting technology improves it gets much easier to find deep old items and those archeologist's, although I am sure THEY believe in their cause are going overboard regulating our harmless hobby!. I personally have lost much respect for their profession! (just my opinion)

Many Detectorists are talking about this. The biggest Question is in what ways are the DNR hoping the managed lands and waters are going to benefit?

The policy has merely been revised in order for it to come into compliance with extant State law.

To answer your question: the cultural heritage sites of the state will be protected on behalf of the many - the public.

Do you really think public beaches are historic and prehistoric sites and if one was I don't think it would be a beach for long.

So, if I own 90 feet of property on Lake Fugawi, I can't detect on it because the DNR controls it? KMA!
