Would you buy old ceiling fans for $3.00 apiece?

scrapwise no, but you can make some money off of them. Take the cover off and pull the wire nuts, the reversing switch, light switch. and then scrap the rest. I got a small box of that crap I just sold for $50 to a "backyard electrician". I think I had 20 switches or so.
10 fans X 2 switches per fan

just something to think about

I agree. The value of the copper and other metals would not equal your costs, PLUS it wouldn't be worth your time. You'd actually be in a hole, value-wise. Scrapping the switches would only be useful IF you had a ready market for them.
