WWI Military Button...

Went with my dad and one of his buddies to their old homestead/farm house. It dates back to the early 1900's. Dug around for a few hours (this place is a little over 300 acres) and I will be going back for sure. Lots of old scrap metal dug up, pull tabs and a few aluminum bottle tops. We were about to leave and decided to go to the front yard.

Got a hit that registered and was jumping from a dime to a penny...Dug about 5" deep and uncovered this old Military Button....The back of it says "American Button Company, NEWARK, NJ"....The front of it is very clear.

Got a hit a few feet from the button was a Timex watch....Can't be that old because it says "WATERPROOF". But it was still exciting!

A few other finds are posted in the pic.....
Small bullet, plastic toy wheel, a 1973 penny, what looks like a link to a bracelet, possibly an old zipper or just a piece of pull tab (it says 301) on it. I researched it but couldn't find much about it. The large round piece looks like the top of an old can....

nice finds... only a few more year older and that quarter would be silver! I believe that is a WWI button... I have one like it.. I also found a timex watch and it was still running! it was a 1960's model...

Are you sure it doesn't say "waterbury" On the back of that button, I have one just like it, and that's what it says. They are pretty old, not sure the exact year. Take another look at it. Not sure why an old button would say waterproof.

The back of the button says AMERICAN BUTTON CO NEWARK,NJ......
The back of the watch says "WATERPROOF"

Your General Service button will require someone with a Tice's book for more information. My current Albert's Button Book doesn't have one listed with that company and N.J. back mark. . .

One thing I like to try and remind people of, just because it's a modern button doesn't mean it's not important history. Great Seal buttons came into existence in 1902, and continue to the present. The men whose uniforms they were sewn on saw service in the First War to End All Wars, the Second World War, and every war since.

I've been fortunate enough to find a few General Service buttons, and they're in capsules right next to my 1840's Navy button, Union General Service buttons, and South Carolina Confederate button.

I seem to remember a commercial about Levis 301 jeans, which is probably what the zipper piece is from, but I don't know how long that company has been around.
