Had a few hours to go back to the historic York church I've been hunting for a year or so. When I first pulled this out I thought it was just an ordinary dandy button, but quickly realized it was the holy grail of buttons! What we have here is a 1789 George Washington inaugural button! Within four feet I found a second one, but it has quite a bit of crust build up. The pattern on the second button appears to be different. Both have been cleaned only with a toothpick. Any button experts have an id in the second button or advice on further cleaning? There is gilt showing through on the second one. All found with a White's DFX. Also found were several wheats and the Indian found by my wife with the Deus.

Man this is the main reason I love this site, you get to see some amazing finds and hear the stories in words of the finder. Sure beats the books.

Great find, you got my vote.

Wow that's incredible. Congrats

Last year I found 4 GW eagle buttons. None of them look led as good as that one, and it has its shank. Very sweet find, and a big congrats. We haven't seen a GW here in a while.

That'll look great on top

Wow wow wow! Huge congrats!!! Here is a helpful resource for them if you haven't found it yet George Washington Inaugural Buttons maybe it can assist you in IDing the other one. Seems to show one similar! If I recall correctly these were sold in sets, so maybe there are more! Banner bote in too haha, killer patina on that chicken eagle!

Thanks Luke. I think this is the right variety.

Huge congrats on a couple epic finds, looking forward to any good suggestions on how to proceed with cleaning/restoring the second one.

man thats nice! The gw eludes my coil you got my vote enjoy the ride.

Sweet jeebus those are some banner buttons! Congrats, and I hope the second one will clean up so the detail can be seen.

Wow congratulations on not one but TWO GW inaugural buttons. That's an appropriate screen name you have there :laughing7: My banner vote is in

Killer buttons buddy. Worthy of going to the top....and still on my list

I was hoping it would be a GW button by the title! Nice man! We haven't seen any posted on TNet in a while and yours is in fantastic shape. Banner vote from me! With something like that I'd consider a professional restoration rather than fussing around with peroxide, electrolysis or any of the other things we do to "clean up" less historic finds. Congrats on great find and thanks for sharing.

I would have to agree considering how rare and important GW Inaugural buttons are! However, you could try soaking it in Mineral Oil for awhile then try the toothpick again. I can't find a possible GW Inaugural button match to the second button online, so I am wondering if it is a new Variety or a Revolutionary War related Military button or even Civilian button from the period.
