personally i wouldnt clean them if you can tell what they are and see a date. in my opinion you are better off most of the time with a cruddy coin instead of a cleaned one. if you choose to clean the silver you can mix up some warm saltwater, wrap the coin in aluminum foil and soak it in the solution. check on it every 5 minutes or so, by taking it out of the salt water and rubbing it with your fingers under running water. the black stains should come off. make sure you dont wrap the coin so tightly that the solution cant get to the coin. i have not really found a great way to clean copper. you could do electrolysis on it but i wouldnt advice it unless it is necissary to id it.it seems to take definition away from the coin. more info about electrolysis can be obtained by doing a search of this site and look for "FLOATERS ELECTROLYSIS MACHINE" or something similar. an olive oil soak is probably the best choice for copper coins that are not terribly corroded. hope this helps a little.
