I know you mentioned possibly gold coins but for the sake, if you found a gold vein/Pay streak I would file a miners-claim if this is on Bureau of Land management property which allows in California metal Detecting. Check the State & Federal laws and invest & file a claim (Which they need proof of precious metal exists.) Under no circumstance do you or anyone let a specialist,Lawyer, attorney ETC. Hold, take/borrow to have it value appraised. NEVER hand it out! Possesion is 9/10 of the law. Once they hold it... Legally it is their Ownership. Be careful. (My Dad always told me: "Don't take chances!". In some cases, if high value the Gov takes 50%!!!!!
(HALF) It took a long time and or rare of a find but to lose half is silly because of taxes. Your's is Your's I say... You earned it pal!

Hi,

We found a shipwreck, in the chesapeak bay a few years ago, my brother has the coordiantes. How do I go about finding a way to go back and escavate the wreck?
could be a supply boat, not sure how valuable.

For sake of the thread you find a huge cache, I mean big- made up of silver and/or gold coins from the 1700's. Whats next? How do you do anything with them without attracting tons of attention and questions? What if the property was owned by the state or government, would it be a repeat of the Mel Fisher ordeal? Before I get questioned by everyone here, no- I didn't find one, I just like to have answears to these things- just in case.

It seems to me that all the doom-sayers predicting the fall of the US economy would advise to keep gold and silver that you do find for the day when our paper money is worthless paper. If the US government becomes insolvent, then, you have REAL money anywhere you choose to go if you can keep it. I am inclined to keep any gold or silver coins I find for that day... should it come.

Tim, As to the Chesapeak Bay. IF you are not in a shipping lane and are a diver. Park an inclosed pontoon type boat or houseboat over the shipwreck. Use a trap door, located between the pontoons to access the water out of view. You may need to rig up a wrinch line for heavier loads. NEVER do this alone, as this is a team event for safety in more ways than one. Nuff Said.
