I was down around Arivaca in the early 90"s.It has gotten much worse.

I prefer to use a permant solution, the more thugs taken off the streets the less I have to worry that they will harm a woman or child later.I KNOW IT IS MY CIVIC DUTY to protect my community

Google serial killers an you all might change your mind about keeping a 45. within reach.

I think this conversation has gotten away from my original question. My question is: Are there any MD groups that I can meet up with when I am out in the Yuma area?? ???

So let me get this straight, plus I have a question. If I come to Arizona and MD close or somewhere near the border, lets say 20-30 miles from it. I need to bring my AR-15 Shorty, maybe my .45, (5) 30 round mags for the AR and lets see at least (7) mags of .45's and my MD. Just kidding, but I don't think I would bring my AR.

Ok lets say someone starts shooting and I shoot back, ALL OK, self defense. I am not worried because I am in Special Forces Part Time and I can defend myself.

Now lets just say everything is calm and I am MD and a local, or federal law dog approaches me. Of course I am sure he will question about me being from Texas, MDing and carrying a handgun with me, Even if JUST a HANDGUN. What do you think will happen when I get approached? I have my idea of what might and will happen which will be as I had this happen to me and this is MY EXPERIENCE of what happened while MDing:
1. With Law Dogs GUN DRAWN, States: Put the MD down, Raise your right hand and with your left hand, (because my handgun is holstered on my right side), slowly reach and unholster your handgun using only 2 fingers and put the weapon down on the ground, slowly, step back away from the weapon and raise both hands, turn around and put your hands behind your head interlocking your fingers, get down on your knees and cross your feet!
2. What are you doing here, (as he is searching you)
3. Handcuffs you, (for YOUR safety he says)
4. Takes out your wallet to get your drivers license and runs a check on you and ALSO asks you if you HAVE a handgun permit.
5. After finding out you have "NO WARRANTS" and "NO HANDGUN PERMIT"
6. Takes ALL your weapons, and unloads them, takes your guns and ammo and puts it in his vehicle.
7 Then he proceeds to tell you that your gun is being confiscated and you are being placed under arrest for "UNLAWFULL CARRY of a FIREARM!
8. While you are being placed in HIS PATROL CAR, he searches YOUR VEHICLE, If it happens to be close by, if NOT I am sure he will ASK you WHERE it is so he can bring you to it so he can search it.
9. Finds nothing else in your car, maybe some more ammo, maybe.
10. As he calls dispatch to HAVE YOUR vehicle TOWED, he waits for another LAW DOG to come as back-up, if one isn't there by now, one of them will inventory YOUR contents in the vehicle, While waiting for the tow truck driver to show up, (if one shows up at all), while the ARRESTING LAW DOG, brings you to the BIG HOUSE to get your pics taken and get aquinted with other cell mates.
11. If you GET LUCKY, maybe they will just HOLD onto YOUR GUNS until you head out of town, (But I DOUBT IT), especially if they ARE NICE GUNS and YOU are from OUT of STATE.
12. Either end up spending a few days in jail, just depends if they arrest you on the weekend or not, see a judge on Monday, once they find out you are from OUT of TOWN or STATE, they will EXPLAIN THIER LAW to you, then you can EXPECT to have FAMILY MEMBERS back home to WIRE you A LOT of money to BAIL you OUT because you are NOT from around there, and MOST STATES, DON'T LIKE OUT OF STATERS treading thier territory, especially carrying firearms.
11. You may have to PLEA BARGAN on a lesser charge and fine and HAVE YOU FOREFIET YOUR GUN or GUNS.

My advice to anyone, as I HAD this EXPERIENCE carrying a HANDGUN in ANOTHER state, (while MDing), WITHOUT a HANDGUN PERMIT, cost me a weekend in jail, vehicle impounded, ($275.00 to get it out), forced to forefiet my handgun for a lesser charge, $1,500.00 fine, and because I THOUGHT I was right to have the HANDGUN for SELF DEFENSE and SAFETY REASONS, (as I explained to the LAW DOG PRIOR to HIM ARRESTING ME, and to the JUDGE when I saw him), hired an attorney, ANOTHER $1,000.00. Total weekend cost to MD carrying a handgun. 3 days of wasted time sitting in a jail cell. almost $2,900.00 including fines, attorney, tow truck, taxi fare to get my truck out of impound, a hotel room far away from that county to get a hotel room, clean bed and a shower. Not including the expense going to and from place to MD prior to me being arrested. Even though I am also self employed, I WILL NEVER work in that state, EVER! I have promotors calling me all the time to come to thier events, I explain to them, if they held it in another state I would come, otherwise, I explain to them I don't need to make money and give these A$$WIPES in that state ANY TAX money from me on any sales I would make there!

My ADVICE, either DON'T CARRY ANY WEAPON WHAT SO EVER UNLESS it is a knife, or GO WITH SOMEONE in that state who knows the area and HAS a PERMIT to carry. Otherwise, you will spend more money than what you expect, lose your handgun, spend at least 1 day IN JAIL, pay for transportation to find the place that TOWED YOUR vehicle, and HAVE a GRUDGE about what had just happened to you and have YOUR WHOLE TRIP RUINED!

I know even though I AM IN THE SERVICE, he didn't care, nor did the judge. I know the borders are getting worse and if you are caught carrying ANY FIREARM and YOU ARE NOT HUNTING, by ANY LAW DOG, be prepared to be questioned AND detained. They know illegals are sneaking into the country and drug runners are also carrying firearms, so the LAW DOGS ARE PREPARED for ANYTHING and EVERYONE and IN NUMBERS TOO. So THIS IS something to think about if one is planning on MDing even close to ANY border, even if it is 100 miles from it.

In AZ you can tote a gun on your side, when down by the border or any where near I carry a FN 57x 28mm pistol....The law will not bother you unless you are doing something stupid, they normally stop by camp to make sure everything is well, I all ways get a lot of comments on my choice of side arm......I have only had one instance where the law asked to look at the gun, once they ran the ID numbers on the gun, it came back clean (meaning it was not stolen) he handed it back to me and said have a nice day......the law usually wants to know who is in there area, they look out for you, if there is any unusual activity, they usually will tell you to be on the look out and be aware of your surroundings......but for the better part they leave you alone once they see what you are doing....Have fun in the desert, bring plenty of water...

You need a permit to carry concealed, AZ allows reciprocal privileges if you have a ccw license in your state. to carry your gun visible on your side in a holster is allowed with out a permit. there are federal facilities and some stores that ask you not to carry, as long as the gun is not stolen, possession is 9/10's the law....providing your are not a convicted felon, you will not have any problems, AZ has very liberal gun laws. I must warn you, you must not get caught on (Indian) res land.....kind like a foreign country with in our own...get a map learn the boundary lines. Transporting through the res is one thing......but shooting there is a BIG NO NO.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info. I got nailed here in Texas LOOONG before I moved here several years ago. Of course Texas has a "traveling defense law", which states traveling to 2 counties of more, (not going to amd from work), which is STILL in the books and I got nailed right after they passed the handgun permit law. At that time it was up to discretion of the officer, of course I got nailed by some hot shot cop who wanted to make a name for himself. I ended up having to forfiet the gun, (which I brought back from the Gulf in 1991, a Makrov 9x18. It was the ONLY handgun that was not much of value and compact enough for me compared to my other handguns, 1911's, Lugers, S&W, etc.

I know close to any part of the U.S. border by Mexico one has to be prepared. I thought about coming to AZ and New Mexico for some treasure hunting around the mountains around the borders. I am VERY aware of what happens around there as I know a few of my team-mates who are Border Patrol, and Texas Troopers who work in that area and tell me the crap that happens down there.

This day and age, I would certainly carry a firearm, but I would also be tempted to bring a high powered rifle with me strapped to my back while detecting just in case some drug lords started shooting at me, but didn't know what Law Dogs would do in AZ or NM, I certainly would shoot back without question if someone started shooting at me. It would just bring back Afghgan and Iraq memories for me not to let some dipsh!t think he is going to get hte better of me. I know that if you are not doing any harm then Law Dogs pretty much leave you alone.

I pretty much stay away from the reservations all together, even while driving cross country, as they pretty much don't like outsiders, unless it is in one of thier casino's.

I been studying up on some treasure hunting out in AZ, NM, areas and hope to meet a fellow T-hunter to go on a venture together and split the finds if any were found.

I live on the border here in the Yuma area and have just about all of my life. I have never seen anyone smuggling drugs or humans. I have seen a few Illegals every now and then and for the most part they do not bother anyone and I usually give them water. Never turn down someone that is thirsty in the desert and always fill up their jugs. My best friend was a cop here in town and was shot and killed by two bad guys another friend who was in charge of undercover cops was shot and killed by a deputy in their evidence room.
I have never seen anything on the desert that would require me using my weapon other than on ferrel dogs or rattlesnake that I couldnt get away from. This is the west here but it isn't the WILD West. I try to always be aware of my area and anyone that comes into what I determine to be my safe boundaries.
It doesn't pay to be paranoid just cautious, I think those that look for trouble find it. So if you come to the desert here in Yuma, it is not a war zone enjoy yourself and just be cautious just as you would walking into your mall or bank at home.

HEY, thanks for the tip. Sorry to hear about your friends. I know how that feels. Most of the drug running etc, seem to be mostly around Texas and NM borders at Mexico. Of course they are mostly stashing them in vehicles prior to crossing over to herr. Quite a bit are being caught and some are not. I know the illegals are not violent, unless you provoke them, as they really don't want the attention being caught and geting sent back, but there have been a few small caseswhere someone was found dead and thier vehicle taken. Turned out it was an illegal, (according to other illegals that witnessed the event), that went to Miami. After a year and a half, they caught him and he was deported and he couldn't stand trial here in hte US, because Mexico came and interviened. which really sucks BTY.

If I get out that way this year close to fall, I will give you a shout.

I was thinking about taking a detecting vacation to the Quartzsite/Yuma area last fall. If I'd known the gas prices where going to drop down, probably would have made some plans.

The very last detecting vacation I had was for 1 month in Quartzsite/Yuma nugget hunting. It happened to be in November too. If gas prices stay down enough, I just might get out there again.

I didn't see any rattlesnakes, don't carry any gun either. Once someone did start shooting while I was detecting in Yuma. But I walked over there, it turned out they were fishing and some fisherman upstream kept throwing empty worm containers in the canal. Every time one floated by they would take shots at it with their handgun.

with all this talk about taken a gun with you while in or the border of AZ. this is what I would use if I had the money. A155 sp howitzer. It has all the fire power that you need.It will blast down any thing in its way will go anywhere hell it can be the camper and hole blaster that you all ways wanted to go treasure hunting. For I know that it great for gun fights, stopping riots, getting the right-of-way. all so great for bird hunting for some come with 50cal. mounted top side.:LOL nuff said Buck

With all of you snowbirds talking about being heavily armed, how come your invasion of space aliens hasn't been on the news

Are the red ants really that big down there in Yuma. I have been in Yuma and did some prospecting. I had the wetbacks digging my hole at knife point.

Don't make me come back down there and show you how it's done.

Your going to have everyone thinking that there is a mexifornian on every square foot of American soil. Just not so, Jeronimo.

I've seen a recent news report on TV which showed how the once, California armed and dangerous border crossers, have now shifted to using the Arizona borders instead.

Does anyone know if Arizona rest stops allow metal detecting? Last time I was there, you could stay at most of them 24 hours. At least there you wouldn't need to carry a gun. :icon_sunny:
