your scoop looks cute but, for water in shell , rock and clay it won't work.

if it works for you - that's all that matters - I could not use that where I hunt

If its a dumb idea and it works, its not a dumb idea. I love to see folks experiment and post results.

Nice work and Glad it is digging treasure for you, the cool is you can check your scoop with the detector to see if the target is in there.. Thanks for sharing...

I can appreciate having a DIY project...and in fact my first detector was a DIY Heathkit in 1970...and my first scoop was a french fry basket. BUT If you want to just be a detectorist pay for the sand scoop and enjoy the ease of use. The PVC pipe scoop will work..somewhat..but is really not very efficient or good.

I use a basket scoop with hardware cloth at the bottom for dry sand..about $35 each (I have 2). The wet sand scoop is a foot driven with Hexagon holes and works like a charm for $120 to upwards of $200.

Detecting is about maximizing one's time (for me at least) and the efficient use of the best available "tools"!

A few weeks ago I actually saw a woman MRer by the name of Ruth who had a sand scoop made of PVC pipe and it was light weight and easy to handle in the low surf. She specifically told me that she could check the scoop with her detector w/o the need to empty the scoop; a big advantage in my opinion. She easily recovered a gold ring almost in front of me and another nice costume ring off to the side while I was digging bottle caps in 4ft surf. It worked for her. But where I often go (rock country at low tide) a PVC scoop wouldn't last a day.

No one said it was a dumb idea, but you.

Actually, I said just the opposite. :occasion14:
Pls reread and note the use of the word 'and'.

(also, did you not notice the LIKE I gave it?)

Hey akoostek, you really need to buy some thermals and get out there. I'm your neighbor from NS. And I have only missed 3 weekends all winter, I have even got a bigger arm cuff strap to go around a thick winter Parker for when it Neg 10c.
I like your idea, I have been using a green plastic shovel (as seen on you tube ) but the blade starts to bend when I push down hard. I have just got off eBay a stainless scoop from the Ukraine, but theres a learning curve with this. I wonder if anyone has considered making a scoop head on a 3D printer using a composite plastic. Super tough and scan it with the coil. Good luck, and get out there and rescue some rusty coins.

Good job on the pvc scoop. Thanks for the video!
