King Searchers please don't screw it up for everyone else & yourself!!

I went to dump a box of dimes today at a bank out here.. the girl there told me they had someone dump $1000 in pennies last week. They used to be ok with me dumping a box of dimes a week. Now they don't care if I never opened the plastic wrapped coins that I'm dumping. They said they would have to ship it off to be counted and I get credited later and charged with a fee like Coinstar. That just infuriated me. Some dumba$$ king penny searcher screw it up for everyone else including themselves. Who wants to pay commission to dump pennies or dimes? If I was a king penny searcher, I would spread it around and not dump at one site. This caused the place to change their policy. People naturally get overburdened with dumps that they don't want to accept them anymore from other people. C'mon the most I've ever dumped in pennies was $25 and they were rolled. Half dollars I understand since there's no real other ways to get rid of them other than spending them and they're not as annoying as pennies. Spend your dumps people!!!

Hey, I'm always accurate with my dumps via weighing rolls before dumping or spending. Maybe, I'm just really angry right now writing this and I need to calm down but common sense is needed. I spend my penny dumps everywhere I go. Obviously if I tried to use all pennies to pay for a full tank of gas, people wouldn't accept it or won't do it in the future. I spend pennies couple bucks here and there on my way to dump or pickup. I go to a couple different gas stations to spend pennies on my way to pick up or dump. I use them at Costco when I buy and everyplace I buy. Common sense, don't get people at these banks annoyed and they will make things harder for you. That's my 2 cents worth.

I know that you guys are out there and you read this and who ever the penny searcher in my area is, spread it around. Don't dump huge hoards at one place and so the whole bank changes their policy on dumps. Dumps just end up back in your order boxes anyhow.

On a side note. This is the same thing as those who sell on Ebay, I can't believe how many people are dumb on Ebay and flood the market. If you flood the market with the same item, it will give the appearance of high inventories and lower prices. If you do lower number of auctions of the same thing, your items will sell for more than if there was a ton of them out there. Simple economics, supply and demand. The appearance of excess supply lowers prices. Guess some sellers out there never took Economics 101.

I just like to hear people's thoughts on this.

Just in the last two weeks, tellers have been mentioning to me that more and more people are requesting coins, empty coin wrappers, and dumping large amounts of them at certain branches... --Go figure :P

My thought is, that unless you're "that guy " the odds of this happening are slim.
However, banks may have variant policies on the acceptance of coins.
So just don't abuse the system. Be a part of it! ( not you, those abuser dudes)

Re: King Searchers please don't screw it up for everyone else & yourself!!

Dumped $1000 as in took that many rolls in or ran through a counter? And I feel bad dumping a couple hundred in halfs...

On another note I did take in $480 in halfs yesterday and the teller was overjoyed. She said she needed to have $1000 in halfs to ship them out and I got her there.

Re: King Searchers please don't screw it up for everyone else & yourself!!

By the way, IF you used 60 peny rolls ($30) in pennies to pay for gas. BY LAW, the store has to accept them ( I think )
So if you are that desperate INSIST that by law they must take them, and you will wait around while they count each and every one of them, if they want.
At that point, they normally just take it and give you a stark stare.

Its federal law, so they have to take it. You have to roll them up though. Some guy on youtube made a video paying for his parking ticket with them.

Just because it's legal tender doesn't mean they are obligated to take it. Just as some places won't accept $50 or $100 bills due to counterfeiting concerns, a gas station can say "No Thanks" to you trying to spend $30 in cents, nickels, dimes, quarters, halves, dollars, etc. They don't have to take your money if they don't want to.

He only got away with it because their agreement with the municipality that had his car towed stated that they must release the car upon payment with legal tender.

THay can SAY that ..." no thanks" and at one store it happend to me.. I was buying $2 of important groceries with 4 pennie rolls and they owner was like " I don't want those" I was like they are just pennies, I worked hard for them, he was like "no way" and I was like " by law you have to take them" then he was like " get the F out of my store, I'm calling the cops if you don't leave" and he fingered the phone.. I left.

Ltrain is correct. The only entity that must always accept all forms, in any amount, of U.S. coin and currency is the Federal Reserve. Private business and individuals can refuse any and all forms of currency if they so desire. The only way they must accept some form is if they price an item in Dollars, even then they can choose to accept some denominations but not others.

She just said that the dumper had them in boxes rolled. But due to the high quantity, they shipped them off to be counted. I can imagine $1000 in penny boxes at one place would be annoying as hell. That's like 40 boxes all at once. What an idiot, this guy can't dump at that bank again probably without being charged with Coinstar type fees. He ruined it for small timers like me too. I can't imagine if this guy does this to every bank. People get pi$$ed. This must be the same person that picked up every penny that my order bank had weeks ago. This guy is just inconsiderate and doesn't understand how it works. If you are out there reading this.. you sir are an IDIOT. It's like what "Frank" Tony Montana's boss said to him in Scarface. Those that go fast, they don't last. I have dumps that I do but I spread those around too. I don't go to the same bank everyday to dump, they don't like it. I know this because I've spoken to tellers and they hate it. Figure out the banks in your area and dump at different branches not all at one time.

THat's totally a free economy.. yeah.
I'm not sure it's 100% true though...
I'm pretty sure you can spend American money in AMerican tax paying stores with as much pennies as you like.
Not sure if there's been a lawsuit yet, like roe verses wade.
We'll wait and see if some guy tried to buy a house with 100 billion pennies, then we'll know for sure.
As for now, I think it's hit or miss. If you can pull it off, spending penny rolls is easy.

I am in mid-peninsula.. Palo Alto area. I dumped at a BofA today.. and they had this policy reversal because of this guy. I had no problems dumping a box of dimes a week there until today. This guy screwed it up for everyone. It is true that it is up the bank's discretion whether they accept your dumps as rolled or loose. If loose, they charge a CoinStar fee but they can consider your rolled up ones as loose too if they want. They accepted my unopened dime dumps as a favor until today. This is how to get rid of those dumpers like that douche b@g that did this. Now I'm paying the price for his incompetance. I want to find out this guy, where he lives, what banks he goes to, and dump a few rolls of zincolns with "copper", or 1970's written on the side to his favorite bank. I'm planning to speak to a manager about this next week.

Re: King Searchers please don't screw it up for everyone else & yourself!!

We get it, dude :) that's the third rant where you say the same thing again.. shame on THAT guy...
Well, is it HIS fault he abused the system, or the systems fault for letting itself get abused in the first place.
From what I've seen, CRH has become a HUGE hobby, nation wide. THe ammount of old coins is skyrocketing downward in circulation

I go to the BofA in Daly City. I never dump more than 200$ in coins. This guy took it to far. Get some sweet revenge on him muahahah! :evil6:

Re: King Searchers please don't screw it up for everyone else & yourself!!

For the "Do they have to take my coins as payment" I found this.

Q: Is it legal for a store to not accept payment for groceries in loose or rolled up coins?

A: Yes, it is legal, according to the Coinage Act of 1965 (Section 31 U.S.C. 5103, Legal Tender).

The act states: “United States coins and currency (including Federal reserve notes and circulating notes of Federal reserve banks and national banks) are legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes, and dues.”

“This statute means that all United States money as identified above are a valid and legal offer of payment for debts when tendered to a creditor. There is, however, no Federal statute mandating that a private business, a person or an organization must accept currency or coins as for payment for goods and/or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether or not to accept cash unless there is a State law which says otherwise. For example, a bus line may prohibit payment of fares in pennies or dollar bills. In addition, movie theaters, convenience stores and gas stations may refuse to accept large denomination currency (usually notes above $20) as a matter of policy.”

Not to stir it up again but if a private business wants to only except RC Cola bottle caps as payment whats to stop them, other than cutting themselves off from that many customers.

Re: King Searchers please don't screw it up for everyone else & yourself!!

My dump bank has a free coin counter in the lobby. Pops out a receipt to take to teller. If I deposit the money, they are ok with any amount. Then you can withdraw in a few days and repeat...

Re: King Searchers please don't screw it up for everyone else & yourself!!

Hey folks
Trying not to get off the original post but it has mentioned this about "having to take coins"
When you walk into a store or bank or restaurant you are actually walking into a privately
owned business.
They are not public property but privately owned. Therefore, we can ask anyone to leave at anytime for any reason. And, we can also say what we will or will not except for payment.
A lot of people think that we have to except anything that anyone wants to do,but it is like going into a persons home.
They set the rules and we must follow them or be asked to leave.
As for the original post I also agree that this guy really messed it up for you folks.
Remember one thing though :)
If, you have $$ in the bank and you are active with your account the bank is much more willing to work with you. If, you have like $50 or less in an account and never use it then
when you need to have the bank work with you they tend to look at what is best for them.
So, use your account. Keep some $$ in it,and you will be surprised how nice they can be.
